In the enforcement of the insecticide
act, officials of the United States
Department of Agriculture have
had some wonderful and weird "remedies
brought- to thoij* attention.
A preparation sold as a remedy
for all kinds of di eases of trees was
found to consist of approximately 80
per cent table salt and the icmainder
consisted of equally "powerful" ingredients.
This great "reme iy" was
sold by an "itinerant tree specialist,"
who "guaranteed to exterminate"
tree diseases and naively info: me !
his credulous victims that tree diseases
wore caused by uneven temper
ature and overproduction of wood
which cauuses the sap to become con
pealed in the "arteries" of the trees.
He compared the treatment of tree
diseases to the treatment of human
disease and consigned to the scrap
heap a-'l the conclusions and result*
of scientific investigators, insisting
that he was the dh-soverer cf the 01.ly
true method of treatment. And
this wonderfully remedy may be
bought, ladies and gentlemen, for the
modest and insignficant sum of only
$3 per can, cash money.
Unhampered by Facts.
Another "remarkable" pieparation
was offered to poultrymen for* the
guaranteed extermination of vermin
iin his flloclcs by the simple expededient
of adding a few drops to the
drinking water, whiich became effective
through the pores of the- chicken
and thus killed the lice on its back.
This was an interesting theory to the
scientists of the department, sin e
chickens have no pores except two
small ones at the base of the tail.
Tliivc sPfMMinii' r?lwl in thn
ical working1 of the remedy meant
nothing' at all in the youn^ life of
the discoverer, who without hesitation
denounced the department and
impatiently pointed out the feather
holes to prove his assertion that chick
ens did in fact have pores.

I couldn't walk across the floor; just
bad to lay and my little ones do the

every thing I heard of, and a number of
doctors. Still I didn't get any relief.
I couldn't cat, and slept poorly. I

For over 40 years, thousands of wo

Read Libels Carefully
Apparently it is only necessary to
devise some treatment which is
simple and easy to administer ant!
the silver-tongued fakers are able
to "put it across." The department
advises all purchasers to write 'for
information regarding the demonstr:
?ed and established treatments
which may require more time an
labor, but which are known to be
safe and the b?st available treatments.
Carefully read the labels
and see if the seller has da<red to
put in print the verbal promises he
makes. If so, the department will get
him if he don't watch out and if he
has made false and exorbitant
claims.
The disinfectant which makes n
strong odor, but which does not kill
any perms; the insecticide or fungicide
which is not effective against
insects or dieases, or which positiveIv
injures the plants or crops; all of
these things are receiving the attention
of your Uncle Samuol who is
endeavoring to prevent the billon and
a half dollars of annual losses to
crops and animals through the lavages
of insects and disease.

PLAIDS AND PLAITS
Designers of separate skirts have
reveled in the combination of plaids
and plaits this season, and varied this
pleasing pastime by exercising their
ingenuity on stripes and plaits. Every
sort of plait is employed to beguile in
tcresting and sometimes surprising efforts
out of familiar plaids nnd stripes
j and if the separate skirt needed anything
to further its cause, It could not
ask better help than the present vogue
for plaits.
One of these attractive skirts,
shown here, employs knife plaits at
the front and back, leaving a plain
panel rtt each side, with kindness
aforethought, for those women win
adore slender lines.

Peggy tried to save the s<?up, but It
was too late. She sat down forcibly In
a puddle of water, the soup landed In
her lap, and over all spread her unibrella
like a hugh snulTer, pouring rivulets
of water down her neck.
The man with whom she had collided
at the windswept corner apologized.
Disposing of his own umbrella he
seized hers, lifted It away frotu the
wreck at*l assisted Peggy to her feet.
"Are you hurt?" he asked.
"No," she answered, shaking the
soup out of her skirt. "But poor Mrs.
Mally will have to do without her supper,
I'm afraid."
"That's too bad. I'm terribly sorry.
It was all my fault. Is there anything
I can do to make It up?"
Peggy hesitated, which gave the man
a chance to see just what kind of person
It was he had encountered so forcibly.
In the half light, with the street
lamp giving an uncertain, ghastly glimmer,
Peggy looked so* ethereal that
the young man had a feeling that she
was going to disappear Into the mist
and float away. Hut with nil her paleness
she was almost too beautiful to bo
real.
"Yes," she answered, all unconscious
of what was going on In the other's
mind, "there is something. Mrs. Mally
Is very sick and she can't have anything
but broth. There Is a restaurant
about half a block away. I've Just
come from there, but I've got to hurry
on to Mrs. Mally's right away. The
baby might fall downstairs and Patsy
is probably making a meal off the
matches while I'm here talking. So If
you don't mind, you might bring the
soup and I'll run along to look after
the family."
.sure, i it gei me soup, is mere
anything else?"
"Nothing, thank you. It's tho Para- j
dise tenement across the street there?
fifth floor.
"Paradise tenement !" He looked at
the high, gloomy building with broken
windows and rickety steps. "It doesn't
look it !"
A few minutes later he knocked at a
door at the head of the fourth flight
of stairs, stairs that creaked and
swayed with his weight.
Peggy opened the door. "It didn't
take you long," she greeted him.
"Won't you come in?"
"I'm dripping wet," he protested,
waiting to be coaxed.
"Oh, that doesn't matter. The roof
leaks in forty places anyway. Come
in."
"Say, this is the darndext place 1
was ever in. It Isn't safe for you to be
here, is it?with all the dampness and
everything?"
"Just as safe for me as for these kiddies
and that poor sick soul in there!"

"Who the?who owns this place? It
ought to be reported to the department
of public safety."
"The Everett Real Estate company."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. At least that's where I paid
last month's rent."
He looked around. Piaster and paper
were falling from the walls, papers
and old rags were stuffed into broken
windows, and, as Peggy said, it rained
almost as hard Inside as out.
The baby crept over and pulled itself
up to his knee, lit? lifted it to his lap
and opened a sticky little hand. Digging
down into his pocket he produced
a bill. "Here, little chap. This might
help generally. Give it to the lady."
"You mustn't do that!" cried Peggy,
when she had extricated the donation
and noted the amount.
"Oh. ves. I must ! it's to et?t n nnrsp

and nil the rest of that Samaritan
stuff. And I'm going to see about tixing
up this death trap. 1 stand in with

I" he said, rising.
"Good-night!" said I'eggy, holding
out her hand. "And thank you, oh, so
very, very much."
And he turned toward the stairs,
feeling that he had left something very
valuable behind.
The next day I'eggy looked up from
her desk. One of the stenographers

Then the Horry boys and coons get
what they love to e it.
When the air is clear and frosty, :>nd
the night drags into day,
They search for coons and Vimivon:*
from Loris to Conway.
They track them down the hollows,
through holes and over hills,
And swear to bag a dozen en route
to 'simmonville.
Old 'cooney fat and cunning, a pest
to 'simmon trees,
Will climb to keep from running thiT

"Now keep that trochlight moving till
you see his eyeballs shine,
"I'll chop him out in no time; that

Old 'possom, you are lazy, yet up to

But Horry boys will tote you in the

Their ax is like a razor and the pine

And when their neighbors taste him,

They boast again that 'simmon time
