seems desirable to ca!! attention t<? i
the fuot that at the present time
market pi ices for the flu? cured tobacco
ajre only a third to a fourth
of last year's pricv.s. and we arc informed
that Just this week a meeting
of representatives of tobacco
growers in Virginia, North Carolina,
South Carolina, and Georgia is to he
held in Rk:hmond for the purpose
of deviling means to relieve the
present situation including consideration
of a- plan to curtail the tobacco
acreage by one-third.
"While undoubtedly the present
economic readjustment tlirouc'i
which we are passing is partly responsible
for the fall in the market
price of tobacco, it seems to be
pretty generally con idered that
there is an actual over-production of
flue cured tobacco this year. Under
the circumstances it would seem that
there is soma question as to the advisability
of increasing the tobacco
acreage in South Carolina."

BORER HELPS INCREASE
SHORTAGE OF PAPER
A grey-green bcet'e has much to
do with the present shortage of paper.
The beetle is the adult form of
the aspen borer, a grub which often
destroys whole plantations of the
trees that arc so essential to the pulp'
Industry.
The beetle gnaws a slot in the bark
and deposits one or two eggs therein.
From the eggs come the troublemiking
grubs that gnaw into the
heart and sapwood and so riddle the
' rees that the first strong wind snaps
;he weakened timber.Poplar
and aspin?both very fast
rowing trees, and for this reason
very valuable to manufacturers?are
'ho object of the borer's attacks. The
imported Lombardy poplar and the
ommcrcial cottonwood of the Mississippi
Valley are very seldom injured,
but all other native varieties
ire damaged by the grub.
In some areas where poplar and as|
nin predominate, the standing dead,
fallen and dying trees exceed 50 per
cent of the total stand. A count
made by the United States Department
of Agriculture on a two-acre
tract of aspins in Colorado gave the
I following figures:
Total number of trees 607
i Number of living trees 2(>0
j Number of dying trees 34
' Number of dead trees 340
Number of infested trees 33
Deformed trees, 40 per cent of total.
Infestation by the borer is most
prevalent between the altitudes of
(>,500 and 8,000 feet. It has not been
found above 9,000 feet.
Method of Control.
The Department of Agriculture has
arried out control experiments in
various infested localities, and the experts
find that the insect can be controlled.
if not entirelv eliminated, hv
either of the following methods: The
first consists of destroying the insect
by cutting the brood trees. Brood
trees are individual trees attacked
several years in succession, and are
readily identified by the scarred
trunks and deformed branches. These
are the breeding points of the borer,
and a man with an ax can cut and
pile fifty such trees in a day. The
trees are piled and burned, or split
open so that the wood is exposed to
the sun.
The other method, not practical in
tho forest, but applicable to shade
trees, is an application of creosote or
carbolineum to the egg scars. This
should bo done in October after the
adults have deposited their eggs.
Further information regarding the
life, history, habits and control of
the poplar borer is contained in
Farmers' Bulletin 1154, which may
be had upon request of the Department
at Washington, D. C.

HOGS PAY BIG MONEY 1
Mr. Pete Wing of Hawk Point,
M.k, made a lot ot' money out of his
hogs. He says, 44 I fed them Dr.
LcGear's Hog Prescription. It has
given wonderful results in putting
gains on them with less feed. They
were on heavy feed for only a
month; averaged a gain of 2 1|2
pounds daily, and were only 7
months, ten days old. when sold."
Mr. Wing profited by the advice of
Dr. LeGear, Graduate Veterinarian
and Expert Poultry Breeder of 5>J
years' standing.
Dr. LeGcar's Hog Prescription
will put weight on your hogs also,
because it expels worms, purifies
the blood and conditions them so
that they gain flesh on less feed.
It makes no difference what ailment
is prevalent among your stock
or poultry, it is money in your
pocket to get the proper Dr. LeGear
Remedy from your dealer, on a
satisfaction or money back offer.
