Conway, S. C.
THURSDAY, DEO. 16, 1920.
Horry county and Conway will
come to the front. Already they are
approaching that place.
o
Those who went in debt when
money was inflated will learn their
mistake when they try to pay in normal
times.
o
A pood road is one of the best investments
that can be made. What
everybody uses is something to be
desired. It pays to put tax money into
pood roads and bridges.
o
Paving is an important thing to bo
attended to on the principal streets
of Conway. It is also important to
take the railroad tracks out first, it
is possible to do that. If it is ever
going to lie done, we should be about
the job.
o
Those who have thought they could
! Jl. . ? O A A 1 I
raise me price ot couon oy uy warning
and stopping gins from running,
should see by this time that this is
not the proper method. The burning
of all the gins in the world would not
have the least thing to do with the
price of cotton.
o
A man can afford to buy a tract
of land or a business lot when the
price of land is unduly high, provided
he can see a clear way of paying for
it. If he can pay only a part and
must give a mortgage for the balance,
he will find it impossible to
Tiold his land and it will be sacrificed
when his mortgagee wants the
money. There is no way to tell what
a piece of land is worth to a man who
Js able to hold it and improve it.
TIMES NOT BAD.
The man who is found going about
doing nothing but crying hard times
is one who is doing himself, his
neighbor and the country in which he
lives an injustice. In the first place
he- ,is wrong when he says that we
are having hard times. The truth is,
this country at the present times is
as well off as it ever has been in all
respects whatsoever, and in many respects
it is better off than it has been
of times in the past.
One reason given for saying that
times are hard is because cotton has
been reduced in price from around
forty cents down to between ten and
twenty cents, running over the period
of the last several weeks, and still
steadily declining. It seems to he forgotten
that once in our history we
had to take as low as five cents per
pound for lint cotton. How is five
cents compared to fifteen and even
ten cents? When cotton was selling
at ten cents some yc .v - ago, when the
"buy-a-bale" movement was organized,
there was not such a cry of hard
times, as far as we can remember.
The price of cotton soon advanced,
but certainly not as high as it is
even now, and everybody thought
they had a square deal. But some
one says that cotton costs more than
the present price to produce it. Well,
perhaps it does in rare cases where
the farmer hires all his work done,
but where a farmer was able this
year to do this, you will find a man
who has sufficient capital to hold
the crop until the price goes up to
21 figure that will make him a profit,
While the farmer raises his cotton
with his own labor, as many of them
have to do every year, then he certainly
has no more invested in the
cotton than he had when cotton wa.1
five cents a pound.
Holding cotton may be hard or
some. In some cases it may be almost
impossible to hold it on account
of having to have the monej
to pay the other man, who has made
advances in producing. In the greal
majority of cases, we believe thai
farmers have been able to get th<
promise of aid in the way of time t(
meet their obligations, and they an
consequently holding the crop off th<
market. While they are waiting
should they, in company with others
raise a cry of calamity that will (lis
courage other people? There is n<
sense in doing so.
o
There are some places where ba<
whiskey is now being made and sol(
to those who are wanting to buy, am
the authorities will have to hav
more help than they now have if the
are to put a stop to this conditior
Th is matter is becoming very scriou
in many places in South Caroliiu
as well as in the whole South.

The Herald management has purchased
a modern sterotyping plant
for use in connection with the newspaper.
This new machine is a late
invention and is not so large and unyicldy
as the outfits found in the
offices of daily appers. It will enable
ilie Herald to reproduce typehigh
cuts from mats furnished by the different
advertising1 agencies, aiso the
mat service which Is issued by the
department of agriculture.
By means of this new machine the
foreign advertisers in the Herald will
not have to furnish cuts for their
ads already mounted on wooden or
metal bases, but can send the mats
which are made of pulp at an expense
of a few cents for postage and the)1
the typehigh cuts will be produced at
the Herald's plant.
o
Again the complaint is heard from
people on the road that there are in
sufficient means here for feeding the
public. About the first of January
a new restaurant will be in busines ;
:it the dining room of the Grace
Hotel. Iielp the enterprise along and
prevent the continuance of the complaint
that we now often hear.
Read the Christmas ads appearing
in this paper and call on the merchants
who advertise for your trade.
They are the ones who .ire most like
ly to have the things you are looking
for.
