farmers to seed adequate acreage or
fall grain that will affect seriously
our ii)20 farming program and the
economic situation in the state nexi
year,'' says Director W. W. Long, oi
the Extension Service. Reports from
County Agents and other agricultural
workers show that up to the present
time the acreage in wheat aru
oats is smaller than it has been for
the past several years. This ha:,
been due partly to labor shortage
and partly to the rather long period
of dry weather which kept farmers
busy gathering cotton and 'which
made most lands too dry and hard
for seeding grain. With a large part
of the cotton crop gathered and with
rains to put the land in condition,
this situation should be improved by
a liberal seeding of these important
grain crops.
Last spring the Extension Service
urged farmers and business men to
work for a larger acreage and better
cultivation of corn to overcome a
threatened shortage. The hearty response
and the good seasons have resulted
in the biggest corn crop ever
produced in South Carolina. Hankers,
merchants, and others as well as?
farmers are appealed to now (,o stim
ulate at once a larger seeding ol
oats, wheat, and rye. There is yet
time for this but none to spare, and
what is done should be done at once.

Campaign.

Clemsin College, Nov. 20.?Realizing
that everybody is concerned in
a broader and better cotton market,
that efficient marketing is a pertinent
phase of extension work, and
that its organized forces can best
handle certain phases of such a campaign,
the Extension Service has put
its organization at the service of the
American Cotton Association and the
American Products Export and Import
Corporation to conduct an extensive
campaign for the corporation
during the latter part of November.
Director W. W. Long of the Extension
Service, is a member of the
campaign committee.
The campaign is to be first of all
educational. Stress will be laid upon
the necessity of such an organization
to market cotton, upon the aims and
purposes of this particular corporation,
upon the co-operative feature of
other business men to put in cotton
and money as stock with which to
work out its success, etc. To this
end the county agents and other
members of the Extension Service
force will direct their energies, leaving
to other agencies the work of
soliciting stock.
Most South Carolina', 'farmers already
know and appreciate the fact
that the Extension Service force?
the only paid force which the farmers
have?stands for and works for
whatever is of vital interest to the
farmers, and the farmers should
therefore be more than ever assured
that the Exports and Imports Corporation
merits their support, or the
Extension Service would not mobilize
its forces in the state-wide campaign
to be conducted next week. Posters
advertising the campaign and circulars
of information about cotton marketing
have already been printed by
the Extension Service to aid in the
work, and prominent speakers are
being secured by Director Long for
the county seat meetings to be held.

DRESSES'WILL BE LONGER.
Paris, November 20.?At the autumn
racing meetings at Lengchamps
French dressmakers, as usual, sent
out a small army of mannequins attired
in the new winter^ fashions. A
dazzling variety of styles were
shown.
Generally the dresses will be a little
longer and more ample. Dresses
of red, blue and yellow were to be
seen but black and white kept the
premier position for smart tailored
costumes. There were numerous
\elvet coats and dresses' Jtrimmed
with the new and fashionable camel's
hair material. One particularly striking
costume was of ermine, with blue
Astrakhan pockets, cuffs and collar.
The skirt was a straight sheath of
black silk, with bands of astrakhan
fur, and was worn with white silk
stockings, diamond buckeled patent
leather shoes and a Directoire black
hat, trimmed with ermine.
Capes of cloih and velvet are ample
and often are trimmed with fur.
The novelty with them is a Futurist
