People in Hhis section of the state were doubtless interested in news dispatches in the daily papers last Sunday telling of the burning of the gin i house of A. K. McLellan in Dillon county with 300 tons of cotton seed and about 300 bales of cotton, two seed houses and a round house. They were interested because, according to the news item, there is but little doubt but that the burning was the work of an incendiary. U II II V I IVIV I O J through the negro quarters of Dillon and had made threats and posted up notices concerning the picking of cotton and the prices to be paid, and it appears that notices had been posted in some parts of the county requiring the closing of gins. According to the news item which came from Dillon concerning the burning of the McLellan gin, considerable kerosene must have been used to start the flames. The loss was over $65,000.00. Such acts on the part of anybody must be the result of ignorance, as well as meanness. The burning of all gins that have been destroyed in the South this fall has not resulted in running up the price of cotton, because cotton has been constantly dropping regardless of this destruction. It is hard to study out the real motives behind those who are committing these acts. It cannot be the result of petty spite in the communities where they live. In their ignorance they doubtless think by the closing of gins and the burning of cotton they can register a protest against the low price of cotton, even if it did not result in running up the price for what cotton was left. It is a nonsensical theory for them to have and they had as well understand that the law abiding people will not stand for this conduct on their parts. The Herald will undertake to publish every news item it can find in the daily papers concerning these gin burnings and posting of notices. The lierald wants everybody to be informed about what is going" on in that line, so that those who own ginneries and have cotton stored may be on the outlook and take the steps necessary to protect themselves. There is no good man or woman in any community who can stand for one minute such conduct as this or anything like it. Those who do not stand for that kind of thing should let it be known and in that way the criminals who would do such things may be better informed and the guilty parties caught and brought to justice. In every case of this kind rewards should be offered by the owners of the property and by the authorities. Suitable reward for evidence to convict will induce somebody to catch the lawless characters. The occurrence at McLellan gin in Dillon county was reported in the Columbia State as follows: Dillon, Nov. 13.?Last night, between 10 and 11 o'clock, fire destroy ed A. K. McLellan's gin house, 300 tons of cotton seed, between 285 and 300 bales of cotton, two seed houses and a round house. There were also five wagons loaded with cotton which were left at the gin by persons of the county hurned with their contents, and an automobile left under the gin house by one of the employees of the owner was also burned. It is thought that considerable kerosene must have been used to have started the flames so extensively in so short a time. The wagons which were loaded with the seed cotton and scattered around the gin house were burning simultaneously with the rest of the plant and the baled cotton, which was some distance from the gin house. Mr. McLellan had only $18,500 insurance on the gin house and its cor tents. His ginnery was valued al $30,000. His net loss it something over $05,000.
