BOLL WEEVIL POISONING
IN SOUTH CAROLINA IN 1920
The following is sent out by Clemson
College, cooperating with U. S.
Department of Agriculture, Extension
Service:
Do experiments so far indicate
the successful development of boll
weevil poisoning?
Present indications are. that boll
weevil poisoning will rapidly develop
into a very important factor in boll
weevil control in heavily infested
fields.
Is it expected that boll weevil poisoning
will take the place of diversified
agriculture in boll weevil control
?
Soil building will continue to be
fundamental in South Carolina agriculture
and it will always be necessary
in boll weevil control.
What is the poison expected to
do ?
To safeguard the cotton crop in
favorable weevil seasons against

sprays safeguard the crop against
insects and diseases but do not take
the place of orchard culture.
May poisoning be expected to b
profitable on poor soils?
. Mr. Coad says: "It seems inad
visable to attempt p >isoning* on lan"
which is not capable of making, at
Least half a bale of cotton per acre
in the absence of weevil injury.''
Is poisoning recommended in
South Carolina in 1920?
It is conservatively recommended
in those coast and near-coast counties
where the weevil is entering on
its third or fourtr year including
the year when it first appeared.
Approximately what territory is
this ?
Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Charleston,
Colleton. Barnwell, Allenda'e.
and Bamberg counties. If the season
is very favorable severe damag
may be expected in Orangeburg an i
Calhoun Counties and also in Dorchester,
Berkeley, Williamsburg,
Georgetown and Hovrv flnnnbVs
where the weevil made its first appearance
last season. The weevil a*=
a rule does not become very serious
the year following* the season of it first
appearance.
In what sections is poisoning not
recommended in 1920?
In the middle, eastern and northern
parts of the State, becau.-e the in4
jury in 1920 is not expected to be
sufficiently severe to warrant it.
"What is the poison recofmended ?
Calcium arsenate, also known as
cal-arsenate, and arsenate of lime.
"Where can calcium arsenate be
purchased ?
From any reliable source; but it
should not be used until full assurance
has been obtained that it conforms
to the Government specifications.
The U. S. Government analyzes
samples free, and instructions
for sending- samples r.re furnished
upen request.
What kind of dusting much in?
may be used ?
No dusting machine is recommend
ed for South Carolina that has not
the approval of the U. S. Delta L iboratory,
Tallulah, La. That lab ratory
has had. the most experience
and is in the best position t> advise.
The thrce types of dusting machines
are hand dusters, wheel traction
or cart dusters, and power dusters.
The hand duster, while a
valuable tool on the farm foi dustiner

to beetle and the leaf inse-ts, is
very laborious to operate for a cuntinuus
period and its use on any
scale in boll weevil poisonisg is attended
with considerable difficulty.
The power dusters have proved undesirable
and will probably be entirely
supplanted by the wheel traction
machine. The wheel traction ma
chine seems to be the most satisfactory
type.
When should poisoning be^in an<l
when and how often repeated ?
As a starting point in this state
in 1920, it Is recommended that poisoning
betfin when the infestation
has reached 15 per cent or 20 pei
cent. Poison three times, five ('ay?

No. Whoever poisons in Sout'i
Carolina in 1920 must remember
that he is experimenting, and should
bad results be secured he should n^t
become discouraged, because many
mistakes will undoubtedly be made.
After this season we will know
more about it.
What are the most important
precautions to be observed in poisoning?
Poisoning should not be undertaken
in 1920 except on heavily infested
land which would produce half a
bale per acre in the entire absence
of weevil injury.
Before you use your calcium arsenate
be sure that it conforms to tVe
Government specifications.
He sure that you have an approved i
dusting machine. Some dusting ma- j
chines are not satisfactory for thi; j
work.
Do not undertake more than you 1
are absolutely sure yau can han lr j
thoroughly. Do not miss or handle !
haphazardly a single step in the rccommendations
or you may ccuit en- !
tire failure.
Where approved hand dusting machines
are used, it is suggested that
the beginner plan on five acres per
machine unless he has plenty of
good labor so that he can rotate
several good men on one machine.
At this stage of development poisoning
is a serious, complicated and
laborious operation, and unless one
is able to prepare properly before bo
ginning poisoning, and unless lie is
prepared to give it the attention it
requires, he should not undertake
poisoning in 1920.
