NOW ON TRAIL OF MISBRANBERS * I Making Poor Quality of Arsenate of Lead for Boli Weevils .1 * > __ / ARSENATE OF LEAD MUST BE RIGHT % Or It Will Result in Killing the Cotton and Not 1 1 Wo ft VV T ! S * Calcium arsenate is the best poi' son to control the cotton boll weevil?and it must be just right or it j will kill the cotton. Last year a great deal of poor calcium arsenate was on the market. Some of it contained s? much wator-soluble arsennic that it would kill the cotton and some of it contained so little arsenic j that it would not kill th0 weevils. ' This year the United Stales Department of Agriculture, acting under au thority of the insecticide act of 1910 is bending every oft'ort to chock up all shipments of calcium air. natc for use in control of the boil weevil. The Insecticide and Fungicide Beard has sent into the South all inspectors who can reasonably be spared from other work, and it is their duty to collect samples from and aid the United States attorneys in the seizure of all shipments that are found by the board to be injjurious to cotton or are inefficient or ai> other wise adulterated or misbranded. Not only is the shipper subject to loss of I liis goods by seizure, but lie is also subject to crimnal piosecution to adulteration or misbranding. Seiz- 1 ,ure proceedings are conducted in the court where the goods are seized, j and the criminal prosecution is I brought at the point from which the ! goods are shipped. ! The inspectors have the aid of va- i rious other blanches ol' the Department of Agriculture in finding the i trail of dangerous or inefficient calcium arsenate. The county agents are on the lookout for it. The boll- I weevil laboratory at Tallulah, La., asks all farmers who buy calcium arsenate to send a sample to the laboratory, where it is analyzed. ! If it is found to be "off color," the nearest inspector is notified and immediately begins preparations for v seizure in the cv< nt that the defect ; is serious enoueh to constitute aj . violation < f the insecticide act. The system of controlling the i wpnvil lur n Mcrm li j ifonn mif I by yea is of research, and 110 effort i will be spared to keep it from pet-1 ting a "black eve" by the use of. misbranded, ineffective po'.s: n. two imm ! dead BY DROWNING; Jv.
