The Way Has Been Opened
for Effective Work by Tobacco
Association
In 1919 a necessity?an embargo
on tobacco' during the marketing
-season?called forth the organization
of the South Carolina Tobac?o
Association. Some g( od work in a
limited way was done at once by
this association, but a realization of
the fact that the great need was
two-fold.?"a better tobacco on a
better market," as the present slogan
of the Association expresses
it, the members sought first of all j
at the beginning of the 1920 season
to build up a strong organization
with a big memberhip including if
possible everybody in the "tobacco
belt" of South Carolina who might
bo directly or Indirectly concerned
with tobacco marketing.
The Extension Service of Clemson
College was called upon for aid
and Director W. W. Long, knowing1
the marketing of crops is as important
as growing them, gladly sent
F. L. Harkey, Agent in Marketing
Work, and L. H. Lewis, Extension
Agent in Marketing, to Florence,
the center of the tobacco territory,
for one month to concentrate on th^
tobacco markctin problem, the first
consideration being a big active
membership. The plan of attack
was to invade the score of market"*
with the association's central committeemen
and visit personally farmers,
warehousemen, bankers, cham
bers of commerce and ev?n busi
ness and professional men, and to
make talks to farmers gathered at
warehouses just before sales, the
committeemen to solicit members
immediately following. In tM- way
the small membership was incrras
ed to over four hundred, and better
still, everybody c neon d was
"educated" as to conditions and requirements
of the tobacco market.
This has enened the way for effective
work by the association.
One aim is to improve the grades
of tobacco offered and eliminate the
poorer grades.

Circular issued
There is being given circulation
throughout the state to a
pamphlet purporting to enmo
from one H. P. Scaife, of Washington,
I). C., making an attack
upon my record in the United
States Senate. The burden or
the publication is that I have
neglected my duties as Senator
by not attending to some of the
roll-calls.
I have challenged comparison
of my record in this respect during
the campaign and since the
issuance of this circular with the
average of those Senators who
stand high in the Senate and in
their respective parties. The
challenge was not accepted and
for the information of my
friends throughout the State I
wrote to the Hon. Charles M.
Galloway, former Civil Serv'c?
Commissioner and now practicing
atttorney in Washington, requesting
that he compile from
