CULL THE EARLY 1:
MOLTING HENS

All l*ens lay eggs in the spring
and early sumrnt r but from now on

In order to save feed tills
and give the poultry flo?k a better
chance it pays us to cull out the j
poor layers and keep only those |
chickens that will pay us a profit. |
The hen that lays only a few j
eggs in the spring and early sum-;
mer is usually a very early molter. I
That is she sheds her feathers any j
where from July to the middle of |
September. This is caused by the j
fact that she is a poor layer; she
lays her clutch of eggs and then
starts molting her feathers. Tho
hen that is a good layer will start
laying in the early spring and will
continue to produce eggs during the*
hot sumir.?" months. She is so
busy manufacturing eggs that she
does not have time to shed her
feathers and put on a new coat until
late in the fall.
A hen that molts before the middle
of September is a noor producer.
She has probably laid from 00 to
80 eggs or hardlv enough to pay f->r B

the middle of September is usually
a heavy lav*"*r and has doubtless
produced 100 or more eggs before
she has had time for molting. Late
molters will also shod their feathers
