It will be wisdom on the part of housekeepers to can the usual amount of fruits and vegetables this year, even if part or all of the fruit must be canned without sugar, according to a statement issued by the United States Department of Agriculture. From all present indications, sugar will be more abundant next winter, when the fruit will be used on the table, the department says. There will apparently he an increased acreage of both cane and 1? et sugar this year in the United States, Cuba, and in other countie s n the Northern Hemisphere. The ris in the price of sugar has encouraged increased plantings of car.o an 1 beets. No Shortage in Domestic Supplies. In spite of a world shortage of sugar and a decrease of 400,000,000 pounds in domestic production, tlv re v has been used or hoarded during the current year in the United State.15 per cent more sugar than in former years. In fact, a greater sup ply of sugar than ever Ik-fore ha** been handled in this country during the past, tow months, witn net imports 25 per cent, or over 1,000,000, ?00 pounds, greater than in any previous period. It is obvious th t; fore, that there has been no actual sugar shortage here this year. The difficulties encountered have arisen from the inability of the consumer to secure his share of the supply. Unless enormously increased amounts have been consumed, the trouble must be laid to hoarding, and it is very evident that large quantities are being held for future use both by housewives and commercial concerns. During the past 50 years the consumption of sugar in the United States has steadily increased, at average annual rate of 1 pound per year, until in the last few years the average yearly per capita consumption for all purposes is between 80 and 90 pounds. This compares wi h a per capita consumption of 58.0 All hical error i JAY llsOO A. M? JULY 31 LORIS, S. C. The increased consumption of sugar by the soft dri*k drink, candy, and ice cream industries during recent years has helped raise the total average, but to what extent is not known. TENDENCY IS FOf INCREASED PRICES Washington.?Reports from Federal Reserve agents throughout the country showed a marked tendency of prices to resume their upward movement, the Federal Reserve Board reported in its summary of business conditions for April. But the board noted the hopeful sign,' from the consumer's viewpoint, of "anxiety concerning the overstrained situation resulting from exces.-ively ( high prices and wages," which it believed forcecast a slowing down in tnc sKy-rocKoting ot prices. While high prices of necessaries were obviously chargeable to ineffi! ciency and under production to a large extent, the board advanced the | belief that the already high ccsts of production were aggravated by the added cxnense of obtaining capital. The re suit has been that, during April, < ndiiions were not as favoraide to a dr.p in prices as they were in I'hb.ue y and March, according to the summary. liiishiess Activity High. "While the agricultdial outlook is distinctly less satisfactory t' an it was a month ago," the summary said, "and while the month of April has been a period of serious la' or disturbance, especially in the tran - portation field, the activity of bu incss has continued high, demand for products strong and with prices tending upward rather than downward. Industries are not, as a i whole, booked as far ahead relatively speaking as in the past, although in some lines the volume of unfilled i orders is very large, i "The export tiade holds up in an unexpected degree and bank credit, I although not materially larger in i volume than at the opening of April, i has had to follow more or less the course of demand, so that expan! sion at various points has taken the place of reductions effected at others." The board "viewed with some alarm" the question of obtaining i adequate labor for the farms. This question was considered the most 1 difficult element of the whole labor situation and was declared to deril8aw?^ TO BOBBY HKRALD, OOR1 icfia in dates of DTD i NESS SITES. .RAGE. SITU:.T. Farmers have been unable to obtain more than half of the labor they need, Southern districts reported. All lines of manufacturing have shown unprecedented activity with textile markers leading in capacity operation. In the shoe and leather field, however, a "mixed situation" exists which in some cases has resulted in a semi-stagnation, according to the reports. While buying power has been somewhat limited by credit contraction in every section of the country the board said that the ordinary sur plus of goods produced?the surplus ' which might operate to rdeuce prices ?had been absorbed through heavy exports. Raw materials which have been going overseas in large quan1 tities, however, have begun to return as finished products to a limited extent and commerce and industry is watching deve-opments closely, reserve agents reported.
