FOR SENATOR SMITH |
Columbia, S. C.?The pec pic of
South Carolina who have been fol- !
lowing- the work of the San Fran- ;
;isco Convention will be interested :
in the important part which Sena- '
tor E. D. Smith played in the delib- 5
crations.
The work of Senator Smith is a
i>est described in the following ar- 1
ticle from the Florence Daily Times! J
Friends of Senator Ellir.on D. J
Smith in Florence county are oe- f
ginning to interest themselves in J
lis behalf as a candidate for re- ;
ilection to the United States S n**0.
not that they are fearful of f
lie ' Vailing to carry the I

isual, but because of the fact that a
they are anxious to recognize the J
Senator's great work in the Senate 1
by giving him a much larger major- r
ity than ever before. J

for a conference with his friends *
later in the week. Senator Smith 1
A'ill be late entering the campaign,!)
Iiis opponents having .already eov- [
ered a large pait of the State. j
In his letter to the people of the )
State which was read at the open- 1
ing meeting of the campaign he re- (
counted his achievements in the
Senate and stated that he felt it
his duty to attend the convention
and as a member of the platform
committee do what he could for his ,
State and the South. It happened '
that he accomplished much, the port
facilities p),unk in the platform, for
which he is responsible being of
deep significance to this section. |
This, however, was not the only
item in which his influence was
felt. Senator Smith happily has
the kr.ack of getting things done
and his activities at the convention
bore fruit just as they have done in
the Senate.
The following rather remarkable
tribute to Senator Smith is taken
from the Raleigh News and Observer,
the paper owned by Josephus
Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, and
will be of interest as pointing out
the esteem in which Snator Smith
is held in the tar heel State.
Senator Ellison D. Smith.
"South Carolina has had a sensational
page in the political history
of the country, but in all of
its novel storv it has not contributed
anything that has a deeper significance
than the origin of the port
facilities plank in the Democratic
platform of which Senator Ellison
