IS THROWN AWAY
Sun Francisco.?American manufactuies
and exporters are car 1-jssly
throwing away the greatest op,
portunivy ever given them to win
fiist place in the world's commerce.
This is the statement of <J arles
W. Weittemorc, Argentine representative
to the Seventh National Foreign
Trade Convention in his key
note add res* es on American reunions
with South American countries.
Failure to study conditions prevailing
in Latin American ports, and
heedless packing methods are allowing
English and German merchants
to rapidly preempt those markets
which should belong to the United

American dealers during the war.
Weittemore, who was president of
the American Chamber of Commerce
at Buenos Aires, for several years,
says that the "greatest majority of
cases in which the chamocr had
knowledge of distrust on the part of
foreign buyers were the result of ignorance
and carelessness rather than
of bad faith. Apparently the weakest
link in our industrial chain is
the packing room, where the desire
to handle the maximum volume at a
minimum expense lead to deficient
packing. These results naturally
hamper us in competitive efforts."

through their careful study of the
most minute requirements of their
customers, says Weittemore.
An example of how the Germans i
make commercial friends was given
showing how Americans lost suprem
acy in India. American firms had
been shipping egg cups to India but
had steadily refused to send representatives
to that country to study
conditions.
German merchants entered the
field, discovered that Indian eggs
too large for the American egg cups
and directed their manufactures in
Germany to prepare a special sized
cup. This cup was introduced in In

PRIVATE OWNERSHIP
BENEFITS SOUTHERN
The return to private ownership
has meant increased profits to the
Southern railway in South Car lina
though it IKt" resulted in a falling
ofT of earnings to the Seaboard and
the Atlantic Coast Line, according
to the reports just filed with the
South Carolina Railroad commission
by the three linos operating irv
South Carolina, showing their earrt
ing.s and operating costs for March
the f'rst month of operation f ?llo\v
ing the return to private ownership.
A comparison of these reports with
those for February shows that the
Southern Railways earnings for
Maivh nearly doubled its earnings
for February, the last month of g'-v
crnment control. The not earnings
of the Mlant'c Coas* Line were for
March less than half of what they
were for February, and the net earn
ings of the Seaboard for MarMi
more than a bundled thousand less
than for February, the Seaboard bp
crating at :i financial loss for March
of $27 091.
