American Expeditionary Force is
told in pictures on the walls of the
National Museum here in a permanent
exhibit just opened to the
public.
Drawn from life in paint, p? n
and ink or pencil by American
artists commissioned and sent to
the front for that purpose the collection
of nearly f>00 stu ios <h tail
jng almost every phase ol lito in
the army overseas is spend over
the walls of half a dozen groat.!
well lighted rooms. It is a tale of'

is m ving onward through a si a o'
mud as the artist saw it; or an on 1
loss lino of weary gun t< ams dragi
forward the batteries to blast the
road to triumph.
At one point tlio artist caught'
and held for his follow countrymen
the breathless tensity of a forest
outpost, peering Urn ugh the 1< afy
screen of his covert toward the
enemy lines, his rifle nuggod close
Vith fingers clinched about the i
trigger; at another a slash of
light from a half-opened door has
painted on the screen of night just
a hint at a rohimn. tramnini* on to
ward battle, just a young face or
two in the line, weary, dirty but
with jaws grim set with purpose.
Again it is a hospital that has grip
ped the artist imagination, a twisted,
writhing form under the tumbled
blanket with agony in every
line and over it the steady-eyed
surgeon or the merciful figure of
an army nurse.
In rooms around the picture display
are shown all the countless
things with which the army and the
navy dealt in the war; the guns i
the bombs, the unifonns of ally and j
enemy alike captured weapons and
German war gear cf many kinds.
These form a striking setting f r
the epic talc the war artists have!
pictured, probably the only su h
i-ecord assembled for it began with,
the army and runs on to the departure
of the homeward transports
at the close.

The great advantage of the centrifugal
gun, army experts say,
will be in its noiseless operation.
The gun consists of a rotating
barrel, approximately one-half
inch in diameter, attached to motor|
driven shafts, the speed of which
is under instant control. By varying

THE BOY AND HIS DOG.
A boy and his dog made a glorious
pair.
No better friendship is found anywhere.
For they talk an I they walk and
they run and they pi,ay,
And they have their secrets for
many a day,
And tliat boy has a comrade who
thinks and who feels,
Who walks down the road with a
dog at his heels.
He may go where he will and hi '
dog will be there,
May revel in mud and his dog will
not care,
Faithful he'll stay for the slightest
command
And hark with delight ,'it the touch
or his hand;
Oh, lie owns a treasure which noli
dy steals,
Who walks down the road with a
dog at his heels.
No oil er can lure him .away from
his side,
He's proof against riches and station
and pride;
Fine dress does not charm him, and
flattery's breath
Is lost on the dog, fo1* lie's faithful
to death;
He sees the great soul which the
body conceals,
Oh, it's great to he young with a
dog at your heels.
