CAMPAIGN PARTIES _
ASSEMBLE SLOWLY

Many moons have waxed ar.ci waned
since political campaigns in
South Carolina held out so little
promise of amusement or excitement
as these begin June 22. The form
will be there this year, but not the
substance. Voters will most likely
go fishing the days the campaign
parties are in the county. No issues
Are involved and the salaries paid
ire not commensurate with the cost
)f the campaign, not to mention main

with the dignaity of the office.
If candidates for reelection to state
offices are to have opposition, that
opposition is slow to develop. T1 e
;>ffiee of adjutant and inspector general
and that of lieutenant governor
will bring contests. General Moore
will offer for reelection to the former.
A. H. Marchant of Orangeburg has
also announced his candidacy for this
office.
Two From Charleston.
Wilson G. Harvey and Octavius
Cohen of Charleston have filed their
pledges as candidates for lieutenant
governor, and Oscar Mauldin of
Greenville will also he in the race.
Beyond these two offices there is
little prospect of any sharp contests.
With interest so apathetic, there
has been some agitation for a consolidation
of the two compaigns.
This, however, can not he effected,
as the rules of the party specifically
provide that when more than one
candidate offers for the United States
senate, a separate canvass shall
be arranged for the senatorial candi
