PAGE SIX URGES TO INCREASE jl ACREAGE OF CORNi 4 ' j I < Horry Farmers Informed of < Great Shortage in Wheat i Production 1 CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ADDRESSES FARMERS Telegram Sent Out by Clemson College Gives Figures on This Subject. "To the Farmers of Horry County: The authorities of Clemson Col- j lego are calling the attention of j farmers, bankers and business men of the State to the prospects for an alarming shortage in the nation's wheat production this season. Southern people need not necessarily be alarmed by a shortage in wheat. Corn and its products constitute a very effective substitute for Western wheat and this crop may be grown anywhere in South Carolina. There is still time to increase the acreage in corn in Horry County and thus to relieve a situation which may be serious as the wheat shortage in the fall begins to be felt. With no idea of suggesting to farmers of Horry County what they should do in the present situation, -but in order that they may have the facts, the Conway Chamber of Commerce is calling your attention to " ' ii .1 ; 1 Lne loiiowing leiegram receiveu from Clemson College: "Reports just received from U. Every farmer should remember the good hard dollars lhat we have spent in making dipping vats for the purpose of killing the Texas fever ticks. There is sonv* woodsland in Horry County that has never been burnt over in the las'; twelve or fifteen years and so long as the hogs and the cattle are in those woods we will not have any. Every man who owns a farm will certainly have a good pasture and his tenants can nut their hoes and milk cows in the same pasture. Brethren, 1 am not quite as selfish as Mr. Gerrald and Mr. Hnrdc* and I thrr.de God that I am not. i am not looking at this question from a personal standpoint. Brethren, the question for us to consider, is it best for our neighbor, the widow an 1 orphans, and the County at laige with only about 10 per cent of the land in Horry County in cultivation? That is the question for us to consider. A man who has not got the welfare of his labor nor his county at heart is not loyal to his God nor his Country. It is not a question of hogs with me, it is the goats, sheep and the cow. There is a large percent of people who depend on the markets for their meat stuffs and the markets are dependent on the farmers and stock raisers of the county for live stock. Now, I want to ask the Merchants and Business Men of the County why do some of you all fight us so hard? The farmers feed and clothe the world. If it were not for us you would have to close your doors, an 1 why do you fight us so hard ?
