in practically every S ate in th
I'nion show that the supply of hive'
farm labor in thi? country is only
about 72 per cent of th? n imal sup

per c ;.\t of a r.o: mal supply a yea"
ago. This vers sh n-tago is almost
exactly lite :ame as t! at of tv '?
years ago, when large numbers of
men woiic in miihiiy service.
The present s'nr atge has arisen ir
spite of the fact that farm wages
are l.~> to 2" per cent higher than
last year. The situation unremedied
can not fall to have an unfavorable
effect on production according to
the United States Department of
Agriculture, and will tend to provent
and reduction in the- prices of
farm products. While the total acre
age undoubtedy will be reduced jus a
result of the present situation, it
will not he in as large proportion a^
the reduction in the labor supply,
because the farmers with their families
are exerting themselves to the
utmost to oveicome their handicap.
Cultivation this year will be les;
intensive, than formerly. More land
will be put into grass and such oth
er crops as require a minimum 01
labor, it is said, and tho tilled fields
will be less intensely cultivated.
