A good citizen is one who abides
by the laws of his country, even if
he is unable to do anything else. j I
o
Goo<l results are produced by care
ful thinking and planning, never by
going ahead at random.
o
A good sprinkling twice a day
would save the merchants many
dollars in keeping their stores and
stocks in clean condition.
o
Good drainage not only brings
more land into use for the people,
but it makes the occupation of all
other land more healthful.
o
If this town is to grow very much,
one thing is sure and that is that
there must be more houses. The
time has passed when men can raise
families in tents.
o?One
reason for the falling off in
strawberry production in this section
was the high prices for tobacco.
High prices for tobacco may not last
always. Better get back to planting
strawberries in good time. "
o
The money spent from year to I
year here in placing piles of sand |'
and clay in the streets only to have
the piles washed away in the first
hard rain; would in time lay the
streets with good hard pavements
and thus stop the expense for a life
time.
?.? p
At last the unrest over the coun- I
try has resulted in some pood to the
whole nation as overall clubs have
been formed in every hamlet and the
price of clothes almost immediately
started down. The public can do a
whole lot when they try.
PROHIBITION AND TAXES. b
There is one tiling which will c^st r
this country a great deal, and that n
e
is the enforcement of the prohibition
1 c
laws. Each State in the union will n
spend much money in efforts under t
State laws to keep down the traffic t
in moonshine; while the national j
government wP- pend still larger u
sums and employ a host of men in
the determination to enforce the v
laws that have been passed. All of. f
this expense will come cut of the i \
pockets of taxpayers. There is no I
other way in which such funds can t
ever be raised. Fonnerly under the r
liquor laws of many of the States j
there was a large amount of revenue )
derived from the manufacture and (
sale 01 wluskey. Nu\v il has been <
changed round so that instead of ^
getting an income to the public
treasuries from the traffic, there ,
will be a big hole in the treasuries .
which must be filled by taxing the }
people. Some one replies and says ,
that well, the people spent much t j
money for whiskey under the wet I
laws, and now they will save that |,
money when they can't buy whiskey ,
with it. That may be so in a general
way. But it is not the same
class of the people who spent their
money for whisckey under wet "laws
that will now have to pay the bulk
of the taxes necessary to raise the
money to enforce the laws of prohibition.
There is the hardship which
arises in the matter. Those who did
not spend t.hoir mnnoy f<>?- H'jv.or under
the wet laws, will now have to
pay the tax money for enforcing
prohibition. The drinking class had
very little property if they spent
all they made for whiskey and consequently
will have to pay comparatively
nothing for enforcoing the
laws which are- intended for their
benefit. 1
We need more acting and less talk
Ing in relation to many of the
things we now have with us.
What has become of the acres of
cut over land that formerly was
regarded as almost worthless property
in this section of the State ?

| serious danger, military men ltfere be

more favorable movement. The largest
operating units are still those
controlled by Carranza and with the
exception of Sonora, Sinali -, and a
few other states controlled by the
rebels, the balance of power was
said to rest with the oovernment.
News from the Southern part of
Mexico confirmed reports that Cuernavaca,
Puebla and Cuautla were in
rebel hands and Zapatistas had gatn
ered in some strength in the southern
part of the state of Mexico adjoining
the federal district.
The official statement published in
Mexico City yesterday and cabled
to Washington that General Dicguez
was in Gladalajara with 8,000 federal
troops was regarded as significent
since the announcement was
made three weeks ago that he had j
started from Mexico City for the j
west to attack the rebels moving j
southward from Sonora. His failure j
to get further than Guadalajara was i
said to have given the rebels an op
portunity to move on Mazatlan and
organize their-lines of communicacat'on
that extend to the American
border.
A report that '2,500 men had been
taken by the government from Manzanillo
to reinforce the garrison at
Mazatlan was not only fully credited
by observers, not only because of

CATTLE DIPPING
MATTER IS ENDED
According to previous arrangement,
Dr. W. K. Lewis, of Columbia,
I came to Conway and met the farmers
of the Cedar Grove section on
Thursday, April, 29th. A number
of farmers had talks to make on the
> subject of dipping their cattle this
- season, and Dr. l^ewis made an intofpfltinc*
talk in which he explained
why it all came about and at first
offered to withdraw the requirements
if the farmers would have
some one out there to send to him
at Columbia some of the ticks that
- are on the cattle so that he might
decide whether they are actual fever
ticks or not. None of the farmI
ers volunteered to gather these ticks
r and send to uoiumma, and linally
Or. Lewis stated that he had decid^
ed to push the matter no further
[ provided II. N. Sessions w> uld go
out there and gather the ti"ks and
send to him, and that for the present
no further stops would he taken
to gel the fair.iOio to dip their
