PAGE TWO PERSHING NOW FOR PRESIDENT I I In Address at Banquet of Nebraska Society He Says He Could Not Decline. t 1 Washington.?Geneial Pershing's ^ first announcement that he would N permit himself to be considered as a ! " 1 1 '* -- ?omo in \ CailUKIUlC ior |)n?iucin/ n uo ... a speech drlivcied at a banquet of ? the Nebraska Society at the Hct?l Washington. His announcement did not indicate on what ticket he might consent to lun. The announcement by Genera1 Pershing was guarded and may no be sufficient to satisfy the manager j of his boom, who have been beseeching him to make a statement, which would give real impetus to the campaign they are making in Nebraska and other states. It wa > ma le m response to suggestion; by variovs speakers at the banquet who proposed him as the "favorite son" of Nebraska in the presidential la e. This is what General Persh ng said: Whole Life Devoted to Country. "1 am not unmindful of the cordial remarks that have been made this evening with refeience to rnvse'f. Speaking of the great office with which you have been kind enough to connect my name, it seems fitting that I should say to you, my friends, that my whole life has been devoted to the service of our country, and while in no sense seeking it, I feel that no patriotic American could decline to serve in that high positi n if called to do so by the people." General Pershing's announcement was greeted with cheers. This was the only reference in Gen eral Pershino's address to the banqueters regarding the presidential race. He paid a high tribute to the people of Nebraska and spoke of his pride in the state to which his parents moved in 1886. His views regarding militarism and the labor situation were of significant interest when expressed as follows: Lands People of Nebraska. "It is gratifying to know that the people of our state both in and out of the service, stood in the forefront in support of the war against Prussian aggresion. Abhorring militarism or class aristocracy of any sort, the people of Nebraska have justly maintained the attitude of our fathers and devoted themselves to the pursuits of peace. "Fcllov.'irg the principle of equal opportunity, cur people have insisted on the education of both the native and foreign born, and today wj boast a smaller per cenluge of illiteracy than any other state. They must n d in future be surrounded "with hampering* restrictions, onerous regulations or adverse market conditions which prevent fulfillment of their duty toward the millions the world over who depend on them for food. Labor ,in 'Nebraska is especial ly honorable, and the laboring man there is held in high esteem.
