It is time to get the land bac
into clover, says the United State
Department of Agriculture.
During the war the Departmen
of Agriculture impressed on the far
riers the world's need for cereak
and the acreage in wheat and cor
was materially increase 1. This n -1
urally resulted in a decrease in th
acreage in clover. Judging from th
figures gathered by the Bureau o
Crop Estimates, covering the pic
duction of pure clover hay, the a?r
age in this crop decreased in 191
below that of 1917 about '20 p^rcen
in the main portion of the clove
belt. When it is considered tha
between the census years 1899 an
1909 the acreage had already <ic
creased some 40 per cent in thi
avea, the decline in clover cultur
seems to have gone so far as t
threaten to be serious.
Rotation Widely Supported.
The practice of rotating crops i
advocated by the department and al
agricultural experiment stations. O
all the rotations the most importan

The Ohio station found that ii

yield of wheat fell from 9.24 bush

cade to 5.79 bushels the second, whil
hi a 3-year corn-wheat-clover rcta
tion the yield of wheat rose fror
9 92 bushels the first decade t
12.78 the second. The Indiana Sta
tion found that clover in (he corn
vheat-clover rotation increased th
total value of the products ove

case and $7.80 in another. The lib
nois Station, as a result of a Ion
series of trials, found that cor
alter clover yielded twice what cor
after com yielded and also moi
than corn in the corn-oats rotatioi
The Missouri Station found that
C-year rotation with clever an

plow under a full crop of clover or
its equivalent as frequently, may be
expected, sooner or later, to bring
about conditions in which commercial

But can the general farmer afford
to buy commercial nitrogen when he
can get the nitrogen through the
clover crop. This is the question
farmers must consider now. In spite
of the high cost of seed, farmer*

of the problem that has been recently
occupying the attention of the

j strange signals that have been receive<l
by wireless in various parts

simple and is as follows:
t "If you throw a stone into the
water to your left and immediately

' feet to the right of the first, the
waves caused by the two stones will
be antagonistic to each other. When
they meet they will tend to neutralize
and destroy each other. But if
you throw a stone into the water
^ straight in front of you and a Seconal
stone, shortly after, close to an'l
irside the wave caused by the first,
^ the wave of tho second will act havmoniously
with the first and w.'ll
^ reinforce and augment it.

the case, and that Venus and Mercury
have been in wireless communication
with each other for centuries,
but, that the sending apparatus of
either one bv itself was not stronir
enough to reach the earth. No hope
could be entertained that their
waves could reach the earth so long
as those waves were antagonistic to
each other. It would be only when
Mercury, Venus and the earth were
in, or nearly in, the same straight
line that the waves from Mercury
1 could be received by Venus, QHd,

' could be reinforced by harmonious

''The conclusion seems to be inevit
