Officials of the National Federation of Women Workers say tfiejr vare unable otherwise to account, for a deep feeling of dissatisfaction ( and unrest among the servant classes. Domestics are not only dissatisfied with prewar conditions and wages, but even when their new demands are granted they do less work ' AUU UU IV ^ 1 uv?ft*"0 V I Before the war British servants were plentiful and cheap. They cannot now be obtained for love or money. The suffering in servantlcss England is great. Even titled house - i holds, which previously servants would scramble to enter, cannot ob- 1 tain sufficient help. Advertisements appear in the "agony" columns of the papers which speak volumes of do- i mestic anguish. Lady Blank, who 1 cannot get a "betwcen-maid" says, < "Two in family, eight servants kept/*'' If Lady Blank, of May fair, cannot get servants, the helpless plight of Mrs. Smith, of Upper-Tooting, may ? he imagined. Factory life during the war is s.:id * to have spoiled the English girl of < the working classes for domestic ser- ' vice. She has had her evenings free ' J while munitioning and now resents i the restrictions involved in domestic < service. 1 The scarcity of servants in Britain 1 is growing into a problem of national 1 importance. Neither the ministry of > labor's activities nor the efforts of j J private institutions which are trying j J to remedy the. situation are meeting 1 with mu<~h success. A barometer of the acutenees cf the servant crisis in England is the real estate market. Small houses of the non-basement variety are fetch- p ? ? $8,000 to $10,000, on long lease- C hold, while large houses with base- t ments arc obtainable at less than p half this price. The wages of servants have doubled since the beginning of the war, while the cost of their upkeep has also increased proportionately. They submit unwillingly to the economies forced upon their employers by the war. One of the things to which they particularly object is the necessity of eating margarine instead cf butler, but, as all classes of the population are now compelled to eat margarine, even the servants have, had to bow to the inevitable. England is suffering from the growth of class consciousness among those sections of the population which the war has not leveled up. This movement toward trade unionism is being encouraged, for it h hoped that many may again be attracted to domestic employment under union rules.
