The coldest weather is not the kind t
that usually brings a snow. j
o
The cold frosts that continue to i
come will do the lands good and help J
to kill out some of the insects.
o ?
Knowledge is power and this means
that when we know we can act in the
right direction, and not otherwise.
o
Great discoveries were never made j
in a day, at least none that ever
amounted to much in human history
or experience.
' ? ? 1
Patience is only another name for
genius. Without patience nothing in
the world can he accomplished that j
nmountts to anything.
? C>????
No one can doubt the hand of
providence, because this is only
another name for nature itself. There 1
is much we can all do to guide the c"
hand of nature to a great extent.
o
When it is said that history repeats 11
itself, it means that old mother na- *
lure has been going round and round '
according to the same laws ever since v
the world was created and human ex- c
irteaice began.
t
o
We cannot begin to understand 1
the workings of the almighty law v
' ' l _ 1 1 * 1 I il i; C
wnicn is Denma us ana me enure
universe. The human mind has never *
conceived it; and we will never
know it until we enter tthe portals of
death itself, and perhaps not then.
c
o
The most important thing; for the
Horry farmer to begin to study hard *
now, is the boll weevil. Horry farm- 1
ers know but little of him and they (
must now learn or suffer the conse- *
quences of ignorance.
o (
The national highway will do great *
things for Conway and for every section
of Horry through which it pass- ' *
es. It will show the people the great j*
value of good roads. They may be |1
costly but they are worth all that
they cost. ?
Discouragement often- steps in to 1
make a man or woman quit even i1
when they are cn the very threshold <
of success and do not know it.
r.
There are several individual electric
lighting systems offered to the
general public now. The Deled is the
one that is being pushed the most
and by a well organized line of
agents through the country. The first
plant of this kind to be installed on
Main street in t,on way, was recently
installed at the City Barber Shop.
Conway is making progress and |
k . will go forward by leaps and bounds ;
after the effects of the war arc
through. Other towns in Horry County
arc doing equally as well in proportion
and will continue to grow.
o By
tne time all of the woods lands
in Horry County are cleared up and
in cultivation, you wi!f see Conway a
town of live times i's present si/.?,
or larger. In time Horry county will
he the equal, if not the superior, of
any county in North or South Carolina
in the production of crops.
o
SUBJECT FOR STUDY.
In a recent issue of this paper
there appeared a news item telling of
the taking of three live snakes from
a doer in Galivants Ferry township.
This dog had been snake bitten several
times, and by a rattle snake
within the last two years before he
was killed to relieve the animal from
his misery. It has often been toM
that if a snake bit a dog, he would
develop a parasite resembling the
snake; but there were few found to
believe such a story. This comes
from a reliable source and cannot be
doubted. The Herald mentions it because
it furnishes something for care
ful thought a: d study and the study
of it might lea! to f-rr thing of
j>roat value to the human ra e.

GETS ABOVE $300.
A net profit of $1,216 61 from four
acres of sweet potatoes is a string j
aigumont for the planting of the potato
as a substitute for cotton. This
profit was made by J. L. Thomas,
who harvested 1,214 bushels of potatoes
from the four acre plot. The
potatoes were put away in the regu- j

been cured and are now in
storage.
Mr. Thomas made more than 3,000
bushels of potatoes, but the yield
from the other acreage was not so
great. The four acres had been prepared
for tobacco. Mr. Thomas then
changed his plans and is now glad
that he did, as his*profits 'from tobacco
would doubtless not have J>ecn
so mu"h, because of the poor quality
