V' FOR WAYS TO KILL

Washington.?Last year while
United States soldiers were making
war against the savage Hun in
France and our sailors were on the
never ending .search for the hateful
German "sub," there was another war
?if it might be called a peaceful one
?being carried on right here in this
country. It was a war by the Biological
Survey of the department of
agriculture, and its many experts
against the many kinds of worthless
birds and animals in order that our
agricultural products might be augmented
by their destruction.
The tremendous scope of this form
of war work that was done in our own
country was conducted under four di visions,
each just as effective as the
army divisions on the field in Franc \
These four divisions were: Investigations
of the food habits of North
American birds and mammals in relation
to agriculture, biological investigations
with special reference to
the habits and geographic distribution
of native animals and plants; supervision
of national mammal and bird
reservations, and administration of
the migration bird treaty act and the
enforcement of the Lacey act.
Uncle Sam, during the year, went
after wolves, coyotes mountain lions,
bob-cats and other stock killing animals
and did much work in suppressing
animals affected with rabies.
Wild Animal Hunters.
In order to do this work properly
it took a force of from 400 to 500
skilled hunters of wild animals. The
number of skins or scalps of predatory
animals taken by official burners
during the year was as follows:
Wolves 584. coyotes 27,100, mountain
lions 140, bobcats 4,122; Canada lynxs J
42 and bears 81. From this it seems
that the once mighty bear which was
king of the glen and forest appears to
be, like the Rod Man, dying out.

There was also much trouble from
