Among the prettiest parties of the
fall season was one given Wednesday
afternoon by Mrs. L. D. Magratli, at
her beautiful new bungalow on Laurel
Street, to Miss Kathleen Sessions
announcing her engagement to Wilfred
O'Dell Davis, the wedding to
take place at the home of the brideelect's
mother in Conway, S. C.. November
12th, 1919.
The living room and reception hall
were thrown together and prettily
decorated in green and white. Chrysanthemums
and roses were the flow

MRS. BURROUGHS ENTERTAINS.
On Friday evening, October 3st,
Mrs. D. M. Burroughs entertained in
her usual charming manner for her
guest, Miss Sadie Magill of Abbeville,
S. C.
"Snow Hill" was very beautiful in
its Halloween decorations of witches,
black cats, and hobgoblins of ail
kinds The guests were welcomed by
two little ghosts, Adelyn Sherwood
and Leila Burroughs.
The games and trials of fortune,
typical of the day, were hilariousl"
enjoyed. At a late hour a delicious
st-lad course was served in the dining
room, which had the customary
pumpkin lights.

on Tuesday at 10 o'clock A. M., No/.
18th, in the Chautauqua tent at
Loris, S. C., for the purpose of encouraging
the building of better
roads in Horry County. Every person
who is interested in better roads
is requested to be present.
The Conway Brass Band is expected
to be there, also the following
speakers have been invited: Gov.
Cooper of Columbia, Hon R. B. Scarborough
of Conway and H. Kemper
Cook of Galivants Ferry. Dinner will
be served on tho grounds. Every

Country Tour Makes Own
Adjustments.
On her return trip, Mrs. "Willium
Upton, the seventy year old woman,
who alone drove a Ford runabout
from San Francisco to New York
City visited the Ford Motor Company's
main office. She was introduced
to the officials of the Company,
was photographed, held in her
hand a Ford check worth two figuri^
of millions, recounted the experience
she had encountered on hci\ teip, and
before leaving made arraignments
for securing a new Ford car imme-1

Mrs. Upton has already driven
her present Ford more than 22,000
miles, 7,000 of which were driven
since she left San Francisco M^y
ltth, the longest day's drive being
100 miles. At Springfield, Illinois,
Mrs. Upton's birth place, she fdans to
dispose of the car and after visiting
her many friends there, will return

When commenting on trip, she
said that in making the thrive from
the Atlantic to the Pacific, it had not
been her purpose to follow a direct
line of travel, but to visit the most
cities and places of interest. She
visited the Petrified Forest, spent
several days in the National Capitol,
drove to Mount Vernon, visited the
site of the Battle of Gettysburg-, and
then after touring to some of the
Atlantic Coast Cities, made her way
to New York.
She experienced practically .. no
trouble with her car, although she
pointed out the fact that she understands
the Ford motor and made her
own adjustments. Before leaving the
Ford Company, Mrs. Upton expressed
the hope that her next Ford, probably
another runabout, will be equipped
with a Ford starter.
