RAPS PLUMS PLAN RAILROAD CONTROL Witness Before House Committee Says it Must Be Buried Deep BE RALLY POINT FOR NATIONALIZATION Other Industries Would Be Affected?Perversion of Socialism. "Washington? The plumb plan for . tripartite control of the railroads un- J der government ownership must be "buried beyond all hope" if it is not to be made a "rally point" for the nationalization of all industry, Edgar J Rich, transportation councel for the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, declared today before the bouse interstate commerce committee, | considering legislation for fino 1 dispo sition of the railroads. Mr. Rich, who also spoke for the Manufacturers' Association not twenty-two states and the Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce, said the Plumb plan, like Bolshevism, was a "perversion" of the principle of socialism in that it would benefit only one class and deny th? socialistic theory of the "general public good. The railroads under the plan, lie said, would be operated "for the benefit of the woikers," while the public would assume all risk of loss. ; The greatest defect of the man. he | declared, is the two-thirds repre- ' sentation Riven the workers and railroad officers on the proposed wage ' fixing board would enable the work- ! ers to "dominate' the goard and fix their own wages regardless of revenues, with the public to stand any resultant loss. ' "The author of the plan," raid Mi. Rich, claims there would he an in- ' ' ccntive for efficent operation because 1 every worker would he entitled to a ^ ^ ^ ^ i Rub-My-Tism is a powerful anti- i septic; it kills the poison cau-ecl , from infected cuts, cures old sores, . tetter, etc.? adv. 4-24-10 2CH. ] * ' i Habitual Constipation Cured in 1-v to 21 Days "LAX-EOS WITH PEPSIN" is a specially- 1 : prepared SyrupTonie-Laxalivo for Habitual Constipation. TOBACCOCROPFOR 1319 IS THE LARGEST Over 44 Million Pounds Sold in August Which Brought Over Ten Million Dollars. The largest tobacco crop South Carolina has ever produced, bringing the highest price per pound of any year except last year, but netting that tobacco farmers the largest amount of money ever made on tobacco in the State, is indicated in a report issued Saturday by the State department of agriculture of the tobacco industry for August, the heaviest month of the season. The tobacco sold by South Carolina producers in August amounted to 44 o45,927 pounds, and brought .si 0,944,116.50. The average price per pound was 24.(>8 cents. The tobacco sales in August were larger than the rest of the season put together, it was stated at the department of agriculture, so that the figuies for August indicate the largeness of the volume of business for the entire season. Sales in July totaled approximately $24,000,000. Sales for September will be very light, it is said. Tobacco sales for August of this year show an increase over August, 1918, of 18,231,486 pounds, and an increase in the money brought of $2,146,602. The average price for August, 1919, shows a decrease of .0643 oer pound. Phenomenal Crop. The tobacco business of this year or South Carolina has been phenomral. The highest price ever paid for tobacco in this State was last year's price of 80.40 cents per pound. The price in 1917 averaged 21.65 cents. This year*s average in August was 24.68 cents. While the amount of tobacco sold by the farmers totaled fourty-four million pounds, bringing over ten million dollars, this does not represent the tobacco business in its entirety. Sales made for dealers and by warehousemen are reported as part of the business, bringing the total amount of business for the month of August to $12,675,117, with 52,861, .'J06 pounds of leaf sold. The department of agriculture's report shows that there are in the State thirty tobacco warehouses. Lake City Largest Market. The largest tobacco market in the State is Lake City.
