FINDS ARMY WORM
, AROUND COLUMBIA

The army worm has made its apr
pearancc on farms around 'Columbia
and are imported to be doing considerable
damage to young sorghum and
peas, according to 1'hilip Luginbill,
entomologist. Farmers are warned ;
to look out tor the posts, and to take |
stops at once to withstand the invasion.
Concerning- the worms, Mr. Lug
inhill said:
"Army worms, hoth the tine army
worm and the fall army worm, have
made their appearance in fields of
young sorghum and in fields of peas
and grass in and around Columbia, it
L quite possible and even probable
that the worms have appeared elsewhere
over the State but as yet have
escaped unobserved. I should like
to i/jJ^e the farmers to be on the
watch and examine grass growing in |
low places in fields, and if worms are
present in number to take steps im- |
mediately to destroy them.
"Heavy rains of some weeks past
were favorable for a good crop of
grass which is one of the favorite '
food plants of the aimy worms.
"Farmers should notify their county
agent immediately if they discover
an infestation and ho will undoubtedly
be glad to aid them in controlling
these pests, applying the measure
recommended for existing conditions.
These measures have so often j
been published that I am sure every j
county agent is familiar with them. J j
