ginal plans announced today. Sale <
of only canned and cured meat and !
canned vegetables was plannd at
first.
Provision is made for meeting the
demand in towns where the chai"ter
restrictions prevent the purchase in
the manner provided or prescribed
by the war department. In such cases
the mayor or some commissioner
may act as the agent.
Instead of carload lots of 30,000
pounds sales may be made in as
small lots as a single case or carton.
The prices quoted to municipalities
are the basic price of the department
in offering the commodities for sale
through the parcel post.
Sales of surplus war department
food direct to the public by parcel
post will begin Monday, the war department
announced. The necessary
forms and blanks for use by the 58,000
postmasters now are being provided
by the war department.
The announcement said sales
wtuld be made in case or carton lots
onlv and nurchasers would have to
add the cost of delivery by parcel
pest from the storage points where
the food now is held.
Prices for the food were quoted *s
follows:
Meats:
Corn beef, No. 1 can 30 cents; No.
2 can f>8 cents; f> pound can $2.
Roast beef, No. 1 can 29 cents;
one pound can 41 cents; two pound,
G6 cents; 6 pound $2.20.
Corn beef hash, one pound can 23
cents; two pound, 40 cents.
Bacon in crates 34 cents per pound;
12 pound tins, 35 cents per pound.
Vegetables:
Baked beans, No. 1 can 7 cents;
No. 2, 13 cents; No. 3 can 18 cents.

The sale, the war depeartment
said, "will be the largest direct sale
to the American people ever attempt
led." The prices were stated to be
| "materially lower" than those prevailing
in the commercial market and
the food was described as being in
excellent condition. The department
said surplus property officers, at
Boston, New York, Baltimore, New

Louis, New Orleans, Fort Sam Houston,
El Paso, Omaha and San Francisco
had been directed to make the
sales. Presumably the regular zone
rates for parcels post will apply from
these cities in determining the cost
to purchasers by the pai-cel post system.

There was a strong demand for cot
ton mill stocks and numerous sales
were recorded at about the same
pi ices which have prevailed.
The Korean Women's Society of
San Francisco sent an appeal to
President Wilson to intervene to protect
Korea from "Japanese aggression."
Because of a lack of funds with
which to pay them, employees of the
navy yards over the country will be
dismissed in large numbers this fisca

Sanders shows below the value of land
preparation with tractor plowing as
opposed to mule-power plowing.
"There are several tractors in the
county, and many farmers would buy,
but are just waiting to see if the
amount of money spent for one is
practicable from the standpoint of
the life of a tractor. Yesterday 1
was in W. A. Uarby s iield that was
biokon with a Fordson and a Disc
plow. A small strip in the center cf
the field was broken with a twohorse
turn plow. The com on the
land broken by the tractor was 12 to
17 inches higher than on the land
broken with the turnplow. I remember
five years ago as county agent in
Arkansas when the same comparisons ;
were being made with crops on land 1
in same field broken with 2 big mules
and a turn plow and 1 mule and a
Georgia plowstock. The tractor prep
aration on sandy soils with clay subsoil
is as far ahead of the two-horse
turn plow as that was ahead of the
Georgia plowstock five years ago in
Arkansas on the same grade of land." j
