b bushel sweet potato curing house according
to plans recommended by th?
United States Department of Agriculture.
In Allen Parish a number
of farmer^ are considering installing
similar curing houses for their own
use. Already 10 or 12 growers have
planned to build these houses, which
will have a capacity of from 500 to
1,000 bushels each. Members of the
Lafourche Parish Truck Growers
Association each will plant an aero of
sweet potatoes several thousand slips
of the same variety having been, ordered
cooperatively. This crop, reports
the agent, has been very much
neglected in this section.

New Drug Law Brings Much
Suffering and Addicts
in Misery
So great has been the suffering
caused among* "dope fiends" in South
Carolina by the enforcement of the
law < governing the issuance of prescriptions
by physicians for cocaine,
morphine and other "dope" that D. C.

and to humanitarian organizations

plan may be devised by which relief

a prescription for narcotics. Jt
is not now permissible for a physician
to be the judge of prescriptions
he gives patients. Under the present
law, a physician can not prescribe
narcotics to drug addicts merely
to satisfy their craving for the drug.
The only conditions, nuder which a
physician way prescribe for an addict
arc that the addict be under the
treatment of the physician for the
purpose of affecting a cure; the law
further provides that the habitauce
or addict be confined while undergoing
treatment so as to preclude the
' possibility of his securing the nar
cetic from persons other than the
i physician in charge. Of course when
a patient is in pain on account of illness
or injury, the physician still has
the right to prescribe "dope" but
even under such conditions ho mnu
^prescribe only a sufficient amount of
the drug to meet the immediate need
of the patient.
.As a result of the enforcement of
this law, hundreds of addicts in South
Carolina are deprived of their usual j

supply of narcotic drugs, and, especially
in the case of very old people,
great suffering ensues. The office of
the collector has been besieged recently
by men and women who make
pitiful appeals to secure narcotics.
Mr. Hey ward said yesterday that, uni
der the law, he has no right to issue a
permit to a physician prescribing narcotics.
Later on, provision will probably
be made by congress to take
care of distressing cases but at the
present time, the federal government
i has no system of hospitals in which
addicts can be handled and the only
course the collector sees by which the
present situation can be alleviated is #
for him to call the matter to the attention
of the people of the State and
so urge the various municipalities and
also all societies which have for their
object the helping and uplifting of
humanity to take steps to aid unfor|
tunatos who are not. able finnnrinllv
to help themselves. Such humanitarian
organizations might place the
unt'oi tunes in some institution
where they could he treated and, if
possible cured of the drug habit.
Mr. Hey ward recently held a conference
with Dr. Fred Williams, superintendent
of the State Hospital for
the insane, in regard to the situation.
