IGNORANCE IN U. S.
OF STATUS OF HAWAII
Honolulu. ? Letters received here
by public officials indicate that in
many sections of the United States
there exists a surprising- ignorance
as to the real status of Hawaii.
As a territory, Hawaii is an integral
part of the United States and
its political status is exactly the
same as that of Alaska and of Oklahoma
before the latter was granted
statehood. Governor C. J. McCarthy
frequently receives letters addressed
to "The American Consul, Honolulu."
One large mainland paper recently
speculated as to the possibility of
Hawaii seeking "self determination,"
apparently not knowing that Hawaii
is intensely American, despite its cosmopolitan
population, and that its
people are extremely proud of the
fact that the territory has "gone over
the top" in every Liberty Loan cam
Ipaign and war charity drive.
A pupil in a public school in a
Nebraska town, evidently at the instigation
of his teacher, recently
wrote a letter for delivery to "some
scholar of Hawaii," describing the
game of basball, his home, and re-1
lating the fact that he had his meat
cooked before eating it, and asking I
foi a description of simple, native
life in the Paradise of the Pacific.
Scores of similar stories may be
tcld, all emphasizing the fact that
many Americans have little knowledge
of this American territory,

It is apparent that a misleading
conception of Hawaii has been drawn
by many from popular songs and
light literature.
Honolulu, with a white population
of approximately 25,000, has more
than 5,000 automobiles, excellent
street car service, electric lights,
automatic telephones, country clubs,
golf links and all the other social refinements.
While it is true that many dusky
beauties take daily dips at Waikiki
beach, they wear made-in-America
bathing suits instead of grass skirts,

Agricultural exhibits at the State
fair this fall will bo under the sub
ject unit system, which is based on
the principle of showing all crpos in
their respective groups and not on
the county booth system. Demonstration
agents from many of the
counties have been in Columbia the
past week inspecting the buildings
I at the fair grounds with a view to
I securing for their exhibits in Octoj

grouped together by the demonstration
agents for the best showing of

This policy was adopted in
1917 succeeding the former method

by counties. The plan is said to
be better than the county display
method and will bring many exhibits

driving their cars over the scenic
roads of Oahu instead of strumming
ukuleles beneath palm trees for the
entertainment of white beachcombers
and tourists.
Hawaii is in the tropics and 2,000
miles from San Francisco but is a
very American part of the United
States and the only movement
known here could be interpreted as
a desire for "self determination," in
an occasional suggestion that statehood
should be sought.

Word has reached Mr. Efird that
Charleston will be represented with
an industrial exhibit second to none
in the South. This display will consist
of various articles manufactured
in seaport city together with other
industrial goods. W. H. Mixson is
in charge and plans to make the display
attract the attention of all fair
visitors.
In speaking of the general plans
for the 1910 fair Secretary Efird
said he confidently expected the
gieatest display in the history of the
fair association. "With the return of
peace and general stability of the nation
and State, 1 see no reason why
thousands of South Carolinians
should not attend the greatest display
of farm products, live stock,
poultry, hogs, horses, textiles and
otner exhibits iu be seen ir. the
State."

TOLL AMONG HOGS
Baker Finds Disease Nearly
All Over State and Costly
Animals Die
Cholera is exacting heavy toll
among hogs in nearly every county
in the Static says L. L. Baker, supervisor
of the hoys' club work of the
State. He finds the disease particularly
prevalent in counties in the
lower half of the State and a taint of
it in every section.
During the last few years, through
the agency of boys' corn and pig
club enthusiasm and enterprise, thou
sands of pure bred hogs have been
brought into South Carolina, and
Mr. Baker says that hundreds of
these valuable animals have been
lost in the epidemic which i* snw?n#l
ing over South Carolina. He knows
of breed sows worth from $100 to
$150 which have succumbed to the
disease, besides the scores of pigs*
and shoats valued from $5 up to $75
and $100.
Just as the cattle tick has been
eradicated by the cooperation of
Stafte and federal forces and appropriations,
there will have to be similar
(pilon efforts to stamp out hog
chelo^d, he says. The latter move
wouU| be just as profitable, Mr. Bake
r thinks, in view of the heavy
losses jjktw being sustained.

feed scientifically and market cooperatively

the Greenville youths have sold 100
