GROWS GARDEN
TO BUY CALF
Alfred Olson, of Klickitat County,
Wash., is a member! of one of the
call' clubs organized by the United
States Department of Agriculture
and the State College of Washington.
With his pure-bred Jersey heifer
calf, Areas Babe, he '.von the State
championship * prize last year. In
1017 Alfred became interested in the
calf-club work, but a pure-bred calf
costs money, and he did not have
funds to buy that requisite for membership.
To enroll in a garden club
as the first step toward entering the
calf club may seem unusual, but that

(lid, and he reached the desired goal.
The weeds in his club garden kept
him busy all summer, but he gave
it such faithful care that his vegetahes
were prize winners. He exhibited
a collection of them at the State
fair and took $00 worth of prizes.
Meanwhile he had been writing to
Jersey breeders for prices and descriptions
of calves. He decided on
Jerseys because that was the breed
his father had. With $40 of his garden-prize
money he bought a monthold
Jersey heifer calf in October. He
kept her in the barn all winter, but in
the spring she was turned out on the
range. When brought in in Septembei
to be made ready for exhibition
purposes she was larger at 11
months than his father's grade
calves of 15 months. At the State
fair Alfred's Jersey was awarded the
State championship prize in the
boys' and girls' club class and was
valued at $510.

How to make a creamy beauty

The juice of two fresh lemons
strained into a bottle containing three
ounces of orchard white makes a

small jar of the ordinary cold creams.
Care should be taken to strain the

no lemon pulp gets in, then this lotion
will keep fresh for months. Every

NAVT FORGE ASHORE
MUST BE REDUCED
Washington.?Secretary of the
Navy Daniels has issued orders for
the reduction of personnel at all naval
shore stations. The order followed
a recent investigation which
demonstrated that the personnel retained
at many stations is t.o 1
large. '
"The commissioned and enlisted
force in the naval districts, especial- '
lv the force at all district headquar- 1
tcrs," says the order, "must be reduced.
Too many men, exclusive of |
those undergoing training or ?.t '
trade schools, are assigned to duty |;
at training stations.
"The enlisted force on duty at '
Navy Yards and at the Navy I)'*
partmont is too large. The navy and
reserves must he cut to at least 2.">0,- 1
000 men by July 1, and to a lower
figure if possible. Reduction in per- |
sonncl performing radio duty ashore
and officers and men not necessary j(
to care for the sick in hospitals must j
be made. The greater part of the I
I
reduction in personnel is to come
from shore stations first, so the |
efficiency of the fleet will not be
impaired." j
