been spending the past year at
Applegrove, Ohio, engaged in the
Government Engineering Work, has
assigned to Georgetown, S/ C.,
and ^will shortly move back with his
family to this section of the country.

We want the merchants to study
the subject of the great loss they
sustain every year by the action of
dust from the street upon their
goods and store fixtures. This loss
is unnecessary when the streets are
paved and a sprinkler system installed;
and the cost of these improvements
wou'd soon be saved.

A suit was recently brought by
John T. Shelly, in the county court
in Columbia, S. C., against VanDorn
S. Wilkins, trading as the Deor Island
Lumber Company, to recover a
large sum as the purchase price of a
lot of poplar lumber that Mr. Shelly
sold this man during the war. The
case was tried before a jury and resulted
in a verdict for the plaintiff.

ways as it informs the outside world
as to the advantages of this immediate
section. In this connection, The
Herald will suggest that capital
should be invested here in the build- >
iug of houses for rent, as the demand {
lias been growing for some time past 1
and cannot be supplied. The Town
may inform the outside world about 1
the opportunities afforded here for ]
the location of business and new cap- 1
ital but familes who may come here *
must have some place to live. Those
who have the money at this time
could not do better than invest it in

electric lights.
Another thing in connection with
this is the making of good hard
roads connecting Conway with other
Towns. Give us good hard roads

S. S. DUSENBURY HERE.
S. S. Dusenbury, of Florence, S.
C\, was an arrival in Conway last
week to spend some time in this
county with friends and relatives.
He had just returned from a trip
he made North where he went for
treatment for a trouble from which
he had suffered for many years and
with which he was constantly growing
worse. By means of a recent
invention mechanical means completely
cured him and his friends
Have been delighted to see him rap- |
idly regaining health and strength.

CLOSING EXERCISES.
Closing exercises will be held at
Ml. Vernon school house on Thursday
night, April 24. Also there will
be a picnic on the Friday following,
April 25th, on which day we are expecting
to have a good many helpful
talks. Mr. E. J. Sherwood of
Conway, will talk on the Fifth Liberty
Loan. Supt. M. J. Bullock will
talk to us regarding the Statewide
compulsory law. Other speakers are
also expected. You arc invited.

WILL MAKE ROAD. i
Among the road projects, approved ;
recently for Federal aid is a stretch ;
of 20.42 miles of sand-clay road from
Conway to Galivants Ferry, this, being
one of the links on the County to |
ucunty road building. The total estimated
cost of this piece of road is
$44,573.76. The plans and' surveys
are completed hut the construction
work has not yet been started.
This piece of road with the impiovements
to be made in the bridges
and trestles across Little Pee Dee
River at Galivants Ferry, when completed,
will connect Conway and
Marion by a good road.

N. C., on to Wilmington and Southport,
and good hard reads leading to
Aynor, Galivants Kerry, Rayboro and
Loris; we would be safer on the map

position to offer to people the facilities
they are entitled to when invited
to visit the county seat of this, one
of the greatest counties in the State
for natural resources. Wo could invite
trade then from other sections
of Horry that now goes to other
towns on accuont of roads, we could
expect more traffic from sections cf
sister counties and the business men
and leading fanners and stock raiser
of other counties would find it to
their interest to come here and do
business. There are opportunities
lying ready to our hands no matter
whether the iron roads come along
or not.
Where is the reason we cannot
take advantage of these things?

Drivers of automobiles from other
.sections will shun a place that is approached
only by bad roads. This
teaches an example for every man
in Horry County to learn when the
question, of better roads comes up for
attention.

From the Circumstances
of This Case.
Magistrate W. H. Chestnut grant;1
a preliminary heating last Friday
to Neumie Huggins and 1). A. Hugffins,
who are charged in a warrant
with having committed an assault
and battery of a high and aggravated
nature upon Albert Johnson and
John Arthur Johnson about the 26th
day of January, 1919, on the farm of
George J. Holliday about u mile
from Galivants Ferry.
A number of people were in Town
last Kriday. some of them as witnesses
in this case and a number who
just wanted to hear the case in the
Court. It is gathered from the testimony
that there were some words
maybe a little noise, but very little
done. As the defpininnf?
the place, Albert Johnson was there
and opened up the conversation by
stating that Neumie Muggins had
tried to run over him with an automobile
the tlay before, and to which
Muggins replied that it was not so
as he was not driving* his own car
that day; but was riding in another
machine which was being driven by
Chesley Best. One word brought on
"mother until in answer to some
harsh language used by Johnson,
Neumie Muggins slapped Albert
Johnson in the face.
A little later, John Arthur Johnson,
son of D. C. Johnson, came
back to the place to get the biciycle
that belonged to Arthur Johnsoru
It is at that time that it. is claimed
by the prosecutor that the boj was
attacked by D. A. Huggins. This
is positively denied by all three of
the defendants; and their story
seems to ho supported by a number
of witnesses who will be summoned
to the Court of General Sessions,
May 2(>th, to prove that 1). A. Huggin.*;
had no weapon at the time and
did not bother John Arthur.
The Magistrate found enough in
the testimony to bind the parties
over to the higher Court.
