CAUSEY CASE TRIED
IN GHARLEST8M
The case of violation of the Federal
laws in relation to equipment
of motor boats recently brought in
the United States District Court,
against C. B. Causey was disposed of
m Charleston last week. After hearing
the showing made by the attorn
I rye for the defendant, Judge Smi h
i fixed tlie penalty at $5.00, which
1 as been paid and the judgment cancelled.
The ease grew out of the failure of
voung Causey to provide his beat
with the required box of sand fo
putting out burning gasoline. Tielaw
is very strict in regard to this
because it is well known that water
is a poor article to use on gasoline
flames. Young Causey was unaware
of the requirements of the law and
an inspector reported him to the government.
The defendant is undci
ayx* anci submitted ins case to the
court on affidavits. He was represented
here by a local attorney of the
Conway bar, and in Charleston by
the firm of Whaley, Barnwell and
Grimball.

Last week the clocks wore put forward
for one hour in obedience to
Uncle Sam's war law and everybody
had to get an extra move on or else
be left behind. It was inconvenient
for some under their circumstances;
but in most cases it has hardly been
noticed since the change has worn
off. It is believed that Congress
would have repealed the law if that

if the act had been passed it would
have ended the day-light saving law

ANOTHER WEEK HAS
FOUND MYSTERY STILL
No Solution After Many Days
of How Woman Got
u *2 l 1% Away. *:!
^Persons coming into Conway last
Saturday stated thai 1 "nothing vthat&Ver
new had developed 1ti what had
become one W the greatest mysteries
in this section for all time. Mrs.
Mary Newton disappeared on Sunday
March 24th, 1919, and could not
be found although the entire ground
between there and the seashore had
been almost turned over in the effort.
The people know that she is
gone but that is all they know. They
think they know about the time she
went, but where she went is a question
that none of them undertake to
answer.
Nearly two weeks had parsed by
Inst Saturday when several men from
Socastee township were in Conway
and stated that they had heard nothing
new about her disappearance, nor
had any solution been found as yet.
In the meantime many tales went
the rounds but as usual proved false
stories. travelling men reaching
Conway, by way of Little River, told
that sin4 had been seen on the road to
that place, or at least an elderly
woman who was supposed to be the
I'Mssijig one. iJut investigation by
telephone and enquiry of those coming
from Wampee and Little River
piQVcd that this was entirely false.
Another tale that gained some credence
v. as that Dick Cox had been
carried down to Dick Pond where he
had gone with Rufus Graham on
March 24th, and was made to show
where he had waded through the water
and that a partly dug grave had
been found along with other indicate
ns showing that she had been killed
anil buried in the sands or in the
nud. This proved to be entirely
false.
While no further active search has
been going on very lately for the
missing woman, yet every ear and
eye in the whole country round here
has been kept open all the time for
something that would load to the
mrsskijv woman. So far the only
answer is nothing; at least this is the
way it stands at the end of two
v< eks from the time she disappearon.
