THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 1919 It does not take a great position to make a great man. o Satisfaction and contentment do not depend entirely upon fine clothes. o Many of the oldest things we know are yet nothing but experiments. This exDlains the reason that no man ever gets too old to leam. Things are being found every day that would be new to a man provided he had ttved ever since Adam's day. ? o No matter how hard the terms of peace may be made and no matter how much the price of indemnity that the defeated nation must inevitably pay; the other nations of the world are finding the Germans to be the same old stiff-necked and arrogant c i owd. o All men, with few exceptions indeed, at heart believe in the future life; some in one way, the religious way, others in strange ways unknown to the Bible or to the church. And no nan can say just how it is, and it is something that none know except those wh ohave passed through the portals of death. "We know or think we know and yet we do not know the things we ought to know about Germany and the war. There are too many things in the world for a man to undertake to master them all; therefore there is good sense in trying to specialize in our own particular line and let others alone. DESIRE TO IMPROVE. It is the desire to improve that has broadened out the cultivated acres ol Horry County during the last twenty years; so that while there are larg< tracts of uncleared lands in this county yet, still this uncleared acre age is small as compared to what i v as twenty years ago. In that tim< sandy hills have been made to pro duce almost fortunes in golden lea tobacco, the sandy lands which thei "were considered as worse than use less to the people; swamp lands ar producing large crops of food stuff every year, and much land has beei reclaimed in other ways. This g ahead spirit lies dormant in som people while it is the ruling passio in other lives among the farmers o this county. On it we depend for th fulfillment of the prophecy ofte made that Horry County will, in th course of time, become the garde part of this section of the State ?: c? .il. n 1?? ooum vyarunna. O i ' DIGGING IN. Everyone has heard about tli wonderful buildings in our great cities. Air hammers, power drill steam shovels, electric blasts, rui t?on pumps hew away the earth an stone to lay the foundation of thes tremendous structures. This is t' process of "digging in,"?the fir step in laying the foundations for ^ the buildings housing the forces that I, n<an the great industrial army of our nutibn. From this sort of "digging in" many of our boys turned to another kind of "digging in." At Chateau Thierry, at Bellau Wood, at Soissons, end at Sedan they "dug in" that E world freedom might live. They laid the foundation for universal peace; with victory for justice, for democracy of the world, over auotcracy. There, too, they laid the foundation u for a fitting monument to their own !. heroic courage. i * Everyone has heard about the c ground-hog. He does his "digging C in" late in October or early Novem- s ber. He does it simply, naturally, i" and along about February 2, he em- c erges and predicts spring and sun- tl shine. si Like the ground-hog, our boys at f home "dug in." They dug deep into their pockets; they cut the purse a strings. They bought Liberty Bonds, ? bought generously of each issue. They did it that the world might awaken from the night-mare of war. Had our fighting army not "dug in" victory would have been postponed; peace would now be a probability, not a fact. Last fall you "dug in" to help win the war.
