Army at Camp Sevier, war. recently released, and he arrived in Conway a few days ago to visit friends and relatives. ? * * * Miss Margaret Lewis, of Lander College, Greenwood, S. C., arrived here recently to spend the vacation period with her parents, Dr. and Mrs G. I. Lewis. Last Saturday was a rainy and gloomy day, but a large crowd of people spent the middle of the day here shipping for Christmas. M * M ? It is a good thing that some persons' heads are permanently attached to their bodies; for if this were not so, some of them would copic down town every morning and leave their heads in the bed. m m * * ? The Ilev. Robert Murphy, the new pastor of the Conway Methodist Church, arrived here last week and remained over Sunday. The retiring pastor, Rev E. L. McCoy has not been able to move to his work at McColl S. C\, owing- to sickness in his family. The local and district boards have r.bout finished up all they will have to do with the world war. Lately they have been ordered to seal up the records and keep the registration cards until further orders from the war department in Washington, D. C. ? ? * m Our merchants were not so well stocked this Christmas with toys and holiday goods as usual in this section of the country; but it was just as well that they were not because the prices of such goods are high, and all the spare cash should go into wai savings stamps. A. S. Eh rich was here last Friday on short leave of absence from his duties in the quartermaster's department at Camp Jackson. He will return to his duteis at Camp Jackson and will be there for a while still, but expects soon to return and again call on the trade in this section. Private Joe Long, of Allen, S. C., was among the number of Horry soldier boys wounded severely in fighting overseas. His name appears in a casualty list published late last week. o GOT SLIGHT WOUND. Corporal Joseph Gore of Little River. S. C\, received a slight wound while serving in the American Expeditionary Forces according to a list of names published in this country last Thursday. o ALLSBROOK BOY WOUNDED. Morris E. Rheuark of Allsbrook s among- tlio list of slightly wounded soldiers from Horry County, while serving the colors on French soil. His name appears in a list published the latter part of last week. ? rt . OUT ON BOND. A. P. Floyd, who gave up to the ^h'riff last week and was placed in 1:.i 1 charged' with homicide, was admitted to bail by Judge S. W. G Rliipp last Wednesday in the sum o: dj ,500.00. The bond was quickly made with N. A. Huggins and Geo J. Holliday as securities on the bond end Mr. Floyd was discharged from 'he County jail last Wednesday af ernoon. His trial will be set for the '.ast Monday in February when the Court of General Sessions will b< eld. He is charged with the killing f Charley H. Grainier, son ol George Grainger, was killed while in the thick of the hardest fighting in France; according to a telegram which was received by his relatives in this country, dated November 19th, 1918. He belongs on the honor roll of the boys who went from this county and who lost their lives in the glorious cause against the Huns. I * i '' 4L. o ..? L. D. Suggs was in Comvfiy last ^lpjj^lay on business .. t V ' 0 n CONWAY OFFICER HURT. Peno&cola, Fla., Dec. 17.?While attempting minor adjustment on a flying boat he was piloting Lieut. R. C. Cant well of Conway, S. C., was caught in his propeller blades and his right arm seriously fractured. Will Johnson, mechanician, endeavored to save the officer and was also injured, losing two fingers. Lieutenant Cant well had just alighted after a flight in a flying boat and was making preparations for another when the accident occurred. At the naval hospital, where he was taken, it was stated tonight that his arm is not hurt beyond recovery. Johnson will lose three fingers. "Rocipiants of the Unusual Gift Are Said to Appreciate It Too. On Saturday night, at the rcsi| dence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Hiram i T ? lmng, at l.ongs, S. C., some one was heard to step up on the porch and i attic the door handle. Nobody answered from inside, and the intruder then went on and opened the door into a side room, remained a minute 1 or two in that room, then went back to the main door of the house and i knocked several times and at once stepped off into the yard. Mr. Long pulled the door open just a little ways and looked out to see a man and a woman standing in the dark in the yard. They said to him: 1 "Look in the side room and you will find a present that we have left you/' Vy the time he could get out and start to go in the room, cautiously of course, as the proceedings appeared to him very mysterious, the party cranked up an automobile and were gone. In the room lying on a quilt that the woman and man had taken from the bed, was a "buster" of a boy baby, apparently about six weeks old, and in a bundle near it were its clothes, and also the necessary milk bottle. Of course Mr. and Mrs. Long will keep the baby and a report reaches ! Conway to the effect that they are proud of the youngster as he is the ' only one in the home. o ; FAKMEK LOSES HOUSE. Last Saturday Mr. Hon Owens, of 1 Sccastec township, went out hunting and was horseback riding.
