over, things must come back to their
level. The war is not on now and
it cannot be used as #an excuse for
many things that were not only tolerated
but welcomed while the
struggle was on.
It is time now to remember that
this is a free country. A patriotic
people is willing to submit to all
sorts of privations and restrictions
to win a struggle like that was; but
after it is over, there is no need
only in minor respects. I

Benncttsvillc.?The influenza epidemic
is assuming alarming proportions
in Bennettsville and Marlboro
County. It is estimated that there

Robert Spears, who lives a few
miles south of Bennettsville, lost one
child Saturday, two yesterday and
one today, making four in two days
from influenza and pneumonia.
Their ages ranged from 12 to 20
years.

Last Saturday during the fire on

G. MARSHAL NANCE DIES.
G. Marshal Nance died at the
Fines Hotel in Mullins, last week,
according to a news item appearing
in the Mullins Enterprise. He is survived
by his wife and six children,
all grown and married except Mrs.
Lula Todd whose husband died about
a month ago of influenza. Mr.
Nance ran the Hotel at Myrtle
Beach a few years ago and had many
fi iends "among the Hotel's summer
visitors. Later he was Proprietor o(

back to Mullins about two yeav:

from other post offices in the abovementioned
county. The examination
will be open only to male citizens
who are actually domiciled in the
territory of a post office in the
county and who meet the ^other requirements
set forth in romi No.
1977. This form and application
blanks may be obtained from the
offices mentioned above or from
the United States Civil Service Commission
at Washington, D. C. Applications
should be forwarded to
the Commission at Washington at
the earliest practicable date.
The vacancy for which this oxnminaticn
is announced is caused by
the enlistment of the carrier formerly
employed on the route. Upon his
honorable discharge from military
service of the Government he will be
entitled to reinstatement to his former
position as earner on this route
in. accordance with the statute approved
July 28, 1910, which is as
follows:
"Any postal employee who has
entered the military service of the
United States or who shall hereafter
enter it shall, upon being honorably
discharged therefrom, be permitted
to resume his positic n in the postal
department which he left to enter
such service."
Howeev, any person appointed to
this position may, in the discretion
of the Post Office Department, be
assigned to other paits of the postal
service; or transferred to other
branches of the classified service;
for which he is elligible.

COl'RT HOUSK ON FIRE.
Early last Tuesday morning the
new court house was on five, the
flames being inside and spreading
just above the rear staircase. The
fire was discovered in time before .1
gained much headway and the flames
were quickly extinguished or the
damage would have been great.
The fire originated in the grand
jury room and parties getting there
early stated that the fire apparently
spread from a box of saw-dust used
as a cuspidor. There had been a
magistrate's trial in tbo room the
evening before and it is believed that
somebody threw a cigar or cigarette
stub into the raw-dust and that
this caused the fire.
