SAVE 16,000,000 BUSHELS
OF WHEAT THAT FORMERLY
WAS LOST IN THRESHING
Farmer?, Urged by Food Adnflnlstration,
Provide Seven Extra Loaves
of Bread for Every American.
By adopting cleaner threshing methods
and by literally combing harvest
fields to gather grain formerly wasted,
thresherfnen and farmers of the
United States this year saved fully
10,000,000 bushels of wheat, estimated
as equivalent to about seven one-pound
loaves of bread for every person In
the country. This result, accompanied
ny corresponding savings or barley,
oats, rye and other grains, is shown by
reports from 33 grain states to the U.
S. Food Administration. Other states,
although not prepared to furnish definite
figures of conservation in the
grain fields, report greatly reduced
harvest losses.
This rural food saving achievement,
accomplished in scarcely six months'
time, was in direct response to requests
by the Food Administration,
which asked farmers and threshcrmcn
to reduce harvest losses from about
3V4 per cent..?the estimated average
in normal times-*to tlpj lowest possible
minimum. Country grain threshing
committees carried into every
grain growing community the official
recommendations for accomplishing
the results desired.
In numerous instances drivers of
racks with leaky bottoms were sent
from the fields to repair their equipment
and frequently bad order threshing
machines were stopped until the
cause of waste was removed. But in
proportion t?> the number of persons
engaged in gathering the nation's grain
crop, eases of compulsion were comparatively
rare. The Food Administration
freely attributes the success of
the grain threshing campaign to patriotic
service by farmers, threshermen
and their crews. Incidentally
grain growers of the I'nited States are
many millions of dollars "in pocket"
as a result of the grain saved.
NO ONE SUFFERED HERE.
The marvol of our voluntary foodsa

is that no one ever actually

By some it is claimed that the running

cases among children may have beer,
caught outside and then developed
while the children were in the school.
At the same time this explanation
was claimed as proof that by reason
of the cases developing in the school,
oilier children caught the disease
from the affeeted ones in that way.

Paris.?-Tlu appointment: of il .
bcrt C. Hoover as Director Genera!
f Relief, having charge of the entirefood
and relief administration of the
European Alli?... and the Ui.it/ d
States, is under consideration. It is
understood the offer of the position
has been made in behalf of the Aliics
and is favorably regarded by
Mr. Hoover, though no announcement
has been made.
The general idea of the plan is to
centralize the organization under
one head so that the food and ton
nage made available by tho various
Allies would be used under one plan
to the best advantage? of each of the
Allied nations. The Director General
would be the supreme executive
heael and would work in conjunction
with the existing Inter-Allie-d Maritime;
Food and Financial Commissions,
which have headquarters in
London. The present American representatives
on tpese Commissions
are Messrs. Stevens, Rublce, Crosby
and Sheldon.
Relief Ship te> Fly One Flag.
Part of the plan is that relief ships
forming an extensive inter-Allied relief
fleet shall fly an inter-Allied
flag, so that the countries receiving
relief will feel it comes from all
alike, rather than from any one
country.
Mr. Hoover, after going to Bins
4-els, will probably return to London,
where the plan will bo considered
hirther. His party includes Robert
Taft, son of the former President,
and Dr. Alonzo Taylor.
