300,000 MEN A MONTH
Chairman of Shipping Board
Says Government Intends to
; Return Part of Army
WOUNDED MEN TO BE
RETURNED FIRST
Says After the Convalescents
Will Be Transported Large
Contingents
Now York, Nov. 15.?Edward N.
Hurley, chairman of the United States
Shipping Board, announced her?
tonight on the eve of his departure
for Europe that the government intends
to return to this country speedily
a large part of the American Expeditionary
Forces. The purpose of
Mr. Hurley's trip to Europe is to arrange
the details for their transportation.
To offset the loss of transport tonnage
through the withdrawal of British
ships hitherto engaged in carrying
American soldiers overseas.
Hurley hopes to utilize twenty fiv
or thirty German and Austrian liners
with accomodations for 4.000 men
each. In compensation for th?
"loan" of these vessels, he said, foo l
would be sent to the people of Central
Europe on their return voyages.
300.000 Per Month.
? Mr. Hurley said tiie snipping
board would be able to bring troops
back at the rate of .'>00,000 a month,
"if the War Department wants them
returned as fast as that." He would
meet Gen. Pershing at American
field headquarters, he added, to discuss
the details of their home coming.
While he will go abroad with Herbert
Hoover, federal food administrator,
to cooperate in arrangements
for the shipment and distribution of
foodstuffs to the regions liberated
under the armistice terms and in a de
gree later to be determined to Germany
and Austria, Mr. Hurley said I
his mission had primarily to do with
"getting the boys back home."
i Convalescent FirHt.
1 Convalescent wounded, including
many who would have returnee tn me
battle front had the war continued,
would be the first troops brought out
of France, he said. They would be
followed by units of various branches
1 of the service, following plans a1ready
partly worked out by Secretary
Baker and the general stall',
i On future developments in the internal
affairs of Germany and Austria
and their relations with the Allies,
the' shipping officials added, together
with the trend of Europeai
events in general, would depend th?
number of troops to be brought t<
this country within the next fev
months, but he was preparing, hi
1 stated, to transport large contin
s gents.

requested that the acreage oi: ?^
wheat he increased 1 ~> per coat, this

of pork production be increased 10
I cr; cent, during the n txt year in orJ*r
to meet the increased dhir/ind
that will he raade upon us daring; the
coming yea?. And now, the fact
tliat hostilities has,ceased will, only
tend to incr&ase the demands that V .
will be made upon the American farmer's
foal products untjil the
war stricken countries of th? East
have reached their pre-\#ar record in
agricultural production* and it may
be assured that this will not take "*"!
place very soon^ jp m, ^
Novombor is the best months for
seeding wheat, and the bast month *
| during which' oats may be s&fely
seeded'*. The scarcity of hay caused
largely- by Che ravages of the fall
army worm, and the high ce?t of
feed! generally should induce every
farmer to increase his acwajre of
oats. The brood sow selected and
kept out of the fattening pen during
thin month will possibly determine
next year's pork production.
Peace now has not removed the.
jneccsstiy of the increase called for. .
It will bo several years before there
can possibly be an over production,
in food crops. In the mean time, the
world will continue to bid for food
stuffs against the Horry farmer who,
is so negligent as to have to buy
from the Western states.
It must 1k? remembered that of ne-.
icessity freight rates will continue to
be higher than before the war, and
the food and feed-buying farmer ?
will have this additional tax upon
his improvidence. All conditions
point strongly towards Oft- necessity
of Horry not only producing its own
food for next year, but some to
spare. This is the month during
which every farmer may protect him
self against the uncertainties of W
1910. T
In fact it is November or never.
