I The Planters Tobacco & Storage "Warehouse has been sold by the own er, Mr. J. J. Williams, to Messrs. Will A. Freeman and R. M. Garrett. The change of ownership took place about the time that the business of this year was wound up by Gravely, Garrett & Co., who had the warehouse leased for the past two or three years. Next year the warehouse will be 11111 by the new firm. R. M. Garrett is well known at tjonway having boon here for the' past several years as a buyer on the Conway tobacco market. Ho has had experience in the leaf tobacco business. Mr. Garrett's hoim is at Greenville, N. C., where he s interested in the tobacco leaf business. The house at Greenville was closed recently for a week on account of the epidemic of influenza. He says that tobacco was selling last week on the market there at an average of $45.00 per hundred pounds. He saw one pile of 1200 pounds bring the sum of $740.00. Our readers will understand that the season is later in North Carolina than it is here, and the tobacco planters in North Carolina grade and tie all of their product. WILL BE SUPPLIED TO HUNGRY PEOPLE Washington. ? Arrangements are to be made by the American an 11 allied governments for supplying the food necessary for the rehabilitation of the people of northern Kranee and Belgium and the demor? 1: 1 ? * un/ii'u civilian populations in southtin Europe. America's part in the program is to be under the direction of Food Administrator Hoover, who organized the commission for relief in Belgium, and of which he still is chairman. The state department an- j nounced today that President Wilson had requested Mr. Hoover to take charge for the American government in cooperation with the various governments concerned with the organization of measures for the projected food relief and to proceed at once to Europe to begin his task. Mr. Hoover, it was learned, is to bo accompanied by Chairman Hurley of the shipping board who will be able to furnish instant information as to the shipping facilities the I United States can supply. His presence therefore is expected to facilitate the working out promptly of the program as the measure of relief will depend to some extent on the movement of food stores in Australia and other countries where they have accumulated through the lack of tonnage to move them during the war. The state department's announcment said the war industries board, (the war trade board, the treasury department, the shipping hoard and the food administration are to aid in I 111* iiVDItimI niluoti/iniviiMif I - v..i jrv milltlll.1 lllllll 171 i sary measures for assisting in feedI ing the people in invaded Belgium j and northern France. It also said arrangements are being made by the food administration, the shipping hoard and the war department for the earliest possible dispatch of food stuffs to the liberated population in southern FiUrope. Decision to assist the civilians in southern Europe was reached by the supreme war council at Versailles after armistice terms for Germany and Austria had been drawn, a reso P* I LAR T A L ers, known as a pari IMF MILES EAST OF WAI public road to Old Cherry Gro\ sold at auction IDAY MEMBER L kville public road running* acroi ?ut running* north and south thi e, near a good Graded school i of it is fine clay land, part darl^ ls Little River swamp land is g Le State of South Carolina thai the land. 1-6 cash, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 year; a farm. Even before that time, however, the American government had given much thought to the subject and Mr. Hoover is known to have mapped out plans for the work. His idea is to carry on the relief work in southern Europe under much the same system as that employed in Belgium and northern France after tho. war began. Under this plan rationing would be under the control and direction of representatives of the al lied and American government. F R A UDDTSCOVERED IN WAR INSURANCE Washington.?Thousands of cases of fraudulent acceptances of government allowances intended for soldiers' or sailors' dependents have been discovered by special investigation of the bureau of war risk insurance and a campaign of prosecution and recovery has been instituted. As a result it was announced that about one-third of the 400,000 claiming dependency, who are receiving checks will be dropped from the rolls when it is shown that they were not depen dent on a soldier before he entered the service. There are hundreds of cases of Washington women, not the wives of a soldier or sailor, receiving allotments and allowance checks, having been named by the men as their legal wives, while the real wives go without government aid. Scores of attorneys are understood to be under investigation for having charged more than three dollars, the legal limit for aiding persons to get allotments or allowance remi'tancs. All persons who receive and cash checks to which they are not strictly entitled by law are to be cut off from their remittances, forced to repay the sums they received fraudulently and prosecuted if criminal intent is shown.
