TWO WATCH AND REPORT FOOT-MOUTH DISEASE Any Case That Develops in This Country Among the Cattle BAD STOCK DISEASE APPEARS AT INTERVALS Outbreak of the Disease at This Time Would Be a Great Misfortune. Public officials, veterinarians, and stock owners should be on guard t-j report, innnodiatoly any cases of foot and mouth disease that may appear in this country, according to a statement by Dr. J. R. Mohier, chief ot tlie bureau of Animal Industry, United States Department of Agricuiture, Dr. Mohier said: "Recent cable news announces an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in England, which brings to mind the serious outbreaks of that disease which have been experienced in the United States. Appearing at Irregular Intervals. " Foot-and-mouth disease has appeared in England from limo to time, a it has done in the United States. In both countries the pa.>t outbreaks have been promptly controlled an 1 eradicated, and no ca>es have occurred in United States since 191 (>. Nevertheless, the disease makes its appearance at irregular ini? rvals. In this country we may expect its return at any time, although every precaution is being taken by the Federal authorities to prevent the in ' Deduction of the disease, especially from the present outbreak in England. So long as communication is maintained with other countries the danger of the reintroduction of the disease inv.'st be acknowledged, "I*: is of the greatest importance that ft sharp watch be maintained V all officials, by practicing veterinarians, and by stock owners in or'der that the very first cases may he tint I the swread of the U I > v i v - - - % disease prevented. It would be a great misfortune to the United States if foot-and-mouth disease should occur under present conditions or become firmly established in the country, as has been the case in many of the stock-raising nations of Continental Europe. Early discovery of the disease, followed by piompt elimination of infected centers, is the only way to prevent the United States front becoming per . manently infected." STATE ITEMS OF INTEREST TO ALL SOUTH CAROLINA PEOPLE The better way out is to put in a full winter grain crop. There will be a fierce scramble for cotton before the end of the twelvemonth, we believe. I Definite announcement was made last night that no State fair will be held this year. Governor Manning wont to Atlanta to attend the cotton States conference in the Georgia capital. Word has been received of the promotion to rank of colonel of James Saye Dusenbury of Conway. South Carolina should ship two car loads of material for making carbon for gas masks the week after November 9. The Columbia Chapter of the Red Cross lias agreed to fill 200 or more Christmas boxes for soldiers overseas. . The only hope for cotton is for the foreign trade to get normal again, and God alone knows when that will be says A. W. Brabham.
