Many have had the influenza and
did not regard it as anything more

\V. K. Cook, Gaiivants Ferry, S

as a fanner in Horry County when
it is considered that he lives on a
rented farm and has to pay rent
while many other farmers operate
their own land and do not pay anv
?
rent. Cook moved* to the place
where he now lives in 1917,,carrying
nothing to the place except about
one hundred bushels of corn; but
since that time he has bought and
: paid for two mules that cost him
about $700.00, a two-horse wagon,
one one-horse wagon, a buggy and
harness and other farming tools
with which ho is now working. He
does not owe anybody any debt and
is living entirely from his efforts on
the. farm.

Lately the night mail lias not been

was the lack of lights in the postoffice.
The room appears to be

two mornings of recent date there
were no electric lights on and as the

Enemy Can Not Hope to Hold

Last Thursday the Gremans started
a retreat on a tremendous scale i
from northern Belgium, Prench
cavalry is approaching Thielt, seven
miles from the banks of the GhentBruges
Canal. The Canal itself is
only 10 miles from the border of
Holland.
So fast was the enemy retreating
that the French, British ;uul Belgian
infant) v, at least, in tl>e center
of the battle front, lost touch entirely
with the enemy.
The Belgians advancing astrido the
Thourout-Bruges and Thouroutr-Ostend
roads defeated the Germans
1. _
I wno are retreating rapidly. ,
This undoubtedly is one of the
war's greatest anil most vital vie1
tories, for the gallant little Belgian
I army, ably assisted by crack French
land British troops, now has driven
the despoilers of its country from it
large section which the Germans
have occupied since the early days
I of the war and has gained positions
I of such importance that the Germans s
I may have to abandon the entire
I coast of Belgium.
Cavalry Far Ahead.
| Moreover, the sweeping advance of
I the allied infantry, preceded by a
I fan of French cavalry advancing
I rapidly, has left the entire area in
which arc the important city of
I Lille and the great mining and manufacturing
districts of Tourcoing,.
1 Roubaix and Tournai, in a salient
I which is growing deeper every hour
I and which the enemy can nol nope to
I hold. The French cavalry, which is
Ion the crest of the allied advance,
I has done marvelous work. It gnl1
loped forward more than 10 kiiomeI
ters, frequently carrying out charge s
I with all the dash usually associated t
J with the cavalry upon isolated posts
I of enemy machine guncrs which vainly
attempted to hold up its advance*
J Some of these gumiers taken prisoner
said they are unable to u:ulei>
I stand why the war was going on an I
J why they wore called upon to con
tinuc fighting. One officer said:
"Wo have offered ah the terms in i
the world for peace; nobody seems
willing^ to accept thorn."
Resistance, where it has been ordered
by the cm my, has been extraordinarily
fierce.
