BRITISH BREAKING UP
HINDENBURG LINE
News la3t Saturday says that
moving forward with sustained power,
British armies east and southeast
ot' Arras appear to have crashed
clear through the Kindenburg line.
Dispatches received seem to indicate
that now they have begun to "roll up"
the German farces on the front to
which the enemy is retreating along
the whole Picardy front.
Bullecourt, which was on the Hindenburg
line, was taken. Hende- i
cottrt-les-Cagnicourt to the northeast
of Bullecourt, also fell before Field
Marshal Haig's men. South of
Mendecourt and slightly to the east
Ricncourt was fcaptured by the advancing
British. East of Arras astride
the Searpe additional gains
were reported.
The Drocourt-Queant "switch line''
now is within striking distance.
Further south the British took the
village of Combles, where there wav.
terrific fighting dining the German
retirement a year ago last March.
West of Peronnc the British captured
the town of Glory and they also
crossed the Sommc south of Peronnc.

With the French Army in Franco,
?The Germans are making a supremo
effort to maintain their positions
on the plateau north of Sois.
ons. They are throwing fresh troops
jagrinst both tlie French and Americans
and are disputing the ground
loot by foot.
After the unsuccessful enemy at- %
, tempts a few days ago to retake the
heights west of the Soissons-Coucy:
le-Chateau road, known as the Ornio
i.i. '
in moniocouve, prisoners taken by
one French division included men
from three dilVerent divisions of ini
fantry and two battalions of craciv
mountain troops.
The loss of the height and a further
advance made it all the mora
necessary for the Germans to preI
.
vent the Allies from gaining ground
on the plateau in the region of Juvigny,
where are the last heights defend|
ing the valley of the Ailette, where
it runs eastward before turning south
ward again toward the Chemin des
Dames. The enrmy has reinforced
his line there with some of his best
divisions of shock troops.
The French third army met with
greater resistance today along the
line of the Somme and the canal Du
Nord. The German opposition was
particularly stout in the region of
I Nesle, where it was necessary to
have artillery to reduce some positions.
Tonight the villages of Rouy le
Grand and Rouy el petit, east of
Nesle, are in the hands of the French,
while south along the canal they have
Breuil, Moyeneourt and La Pannet
iiwnii 01 iNesie, where General
Humbert's troops also are approaching
the Somnie, the Germans launched
a counter attack against Mortmain
without success. The Germans appear
to be strongly reinforced by
artillery along the canal Ptu Nord
where their resistance is stiffening.
After the capture of Noyon, French
troops advanced eastward to the
iouthein slopes of Mont St. Simeon.
