WAY NOW PREPARED
FOR PERONNE ENTRY
French Break Down Heavy
German Resistance Alone"
Canal Du Nord.
Sunday news says that Mont St.
Quentin, dominating; Peronne and
the angle of the Somme River, has
been taken hy the Australians. togethei
with Fcuillaueourt, lying to
the west. In this operation, which
was in the nature of a surprise attack.
more than l.oOO prisoners wore
taken.
The way i.? now prepared for the
occcupi tion of IVronne and a further
advance to the east. Simultaeously
the French have broken down the resistance
of heavy (lerman fores
along- the Canal du Nord, north of
Soissons. The French are already in
complete possession of Juvigny and
Crouy and h^ive reached the western
outskirts of Leury.
Notwithstanding the fact that the
allied progress has slowed down
somewhat, owing to the reinforcements
the Germans have rushed to
the fore in an endeavor to hold the
vital points on their line as long as
possible, there has been no cessation
of the ailed thrusts along the entire
80 mile front and with minor exceptions
these thrusts have been successful.
A gain of great importance in the
Lys sector has been made by the British
who are now in possession of that
much fought over ground, Kemmel
Hill.
Advance Slows Down.
Fighting desperately to delay the
allied forces until the retreating German
legions can be extricated from
the Sommo and Santerre battlefields
and placed in comparative safety behind
the Hindcnburg line, General Ludendorff's
armies seem for the time
being to have almost checked the advance
of the British, French and Americans.
At only one point in Picanly have
the Germans boon forced to give
ground during the past day. This is
just to the north of Peronne. where
the Somine River turns to th<* westward
after flowing north along the
front. Here the British have advanced
a considerable distance, according
to advices from the field
but they have not continued the victorious
sweep that marked their progress
after the German line had given
way southwest of Bapaume.
In the south near Soissons, Frencl
and Americans are keeping up tin i;
pressure against the German line
which threatens to outflank the one
my positions along the Aisne am
Yesle. Further north, the Frencl
have made only local gains in thei
efTort to reach Coucy-le-Chateau am
capture the heights which dominat
the old German positions along th
Ghent in-des-Dames.
Westward from the Ailette alonj
the Oise and northward to the So mm
River, west of Ham, the French ar
fighting hard, but their advance i
slow.
North of the Sornme battlefiel
proper the Germans, seeing the dang
or to their entire army in further ir
roads of the British across the Hir
denhurg line southeast and east c
Arras, have massed men and gun
to hold that portion of their front s<
cure. British forces have nearl
broken through in that region an
the danger to the Germans is not y<
over.
In the i danders battle area tli
Germans now are rapidly retiring t
their lines running near Armentierr
from which they stormed late i
April. Mont Kemmel, southwest <
Ypres, has been taken by the Britis
while Bailleu, where there was tori
fie fighting when the Germans wei
striving to reach the channel port
is again in the hands of Field Mai
shal Haig's men.
Enemy Loses Much Ground.
Further south the Germans ai
now east of the Lawe River and tl
British have taken more ground i
the northeast of Bethune. As near
as it is possible to measure the e:
tent of the German retirement du
ing the day, it seems that the encrr
has abandoned a strip from one
two miles deep over what would 1
equal to a front of about 12 miles,
