Paris.?As tho battle news reaches 1
Paris the smile on the faces of, the '
inhabitants becomes bigger and lasts
longer. American soldiers in Paris
are the centre of admiration on the
boulevards, every one wanting to con
gratulate them on the success of *
their comrades fighting on the
Marne. Poilus on leave in Paris go
up to the big American boys and
heartily shake their hands.
Late yesterday afternoon auto
ambulances driven by French soldiers
filed down the Avenue dt
l'Opera conveying American wounded
to one of the big French hospitals
ir? the centre of the city. The men.
looking out of the ambulances, were
scon recognized as Americans by
the French promenaders, who cheered
again and again. The American
boys avknowledged the French enthusiasm,
some waving their hands,
others with arms bandaged, smiling
and shaking their heads.
Yet War Is So Near.
Little more than fifty miles from
mailing Paris the battle continue.-, j
the Allied troops breaking up fierce <
counter attacks launched by Ludcn- ;
dorff between tho Ourcq and Marnc. <
? Using fresh reserves Ludendorff decided
to attempt to hold the Allies'
furious drive toward the east and
north, but these counterblows ' failed
just as did the large scale offensive
on June 15.
In what a hurry the German forces
sit Chateau-Thierry had to retire is
shown by the fact that the Allie;
were able to cross the Maine
five miles north of the reconquered
town. Here Ludendorff is putting
up a fierce resistance which slowly
is being reduced by the imeptuous
dash of the Americans. On tho left
wing the enemy's resistance appears
to have been stronger. The object of
the counter attacks by the German
t- no doubt to save Chateau-Thierry
Soissons road, the last important
well built road left to Ludendorff's
retreating trcops.

Washington.?r-The Gorman Government
and military leaders are
hiding from their people the crushing
defeat suffered in the Maine salient.
This fact is disclosed in an official
despatch received here today from
Paris, discussing the Allied-American
drive. The despatch follows:
"In spite of the desperate resistance
of the enemy to prevent our
counter offensive causing still more
serious consequences, the operations j
of the 23rd brought in favorable
changes for our army.
"It is known the troops of Gen.
Debancy have gained a fine success
on the western bank of the Avre
north of Montdidier, where 1,500
Germans fell into our hands. This
high number of prisoners taken on a
front limited to six kilometres testifies
to the importance of the success
gained.
"In conformity with its formal attitude,
the German high command K
seeking to conceal this defeat." The
communique of Tuesday evening
limits itself in reporting this operation
to the following laconic phrase:
'Local fighting on the western bank
of the Avre.' For eight days the
German command has been compelled
to hide by every means the
real truth from the German public."
