today vetoed the annual agricultural
appropriation bill containing an j
amendment increasing the price ofj
wheat to $2.40 per bushel. The President's
message said the increase in |
the price of wheat would add $2 to]
the cost of a barrel of flour, and!
would add $387,000,000 to the 900,- J
000,000-bushel crop of 1918 wheat. 1
It also would cause a corresponding j
increase in the price of Canadian
wheat, the message said, and would
add very materially to the general
high cost of living.
Affects Whole World.
The price increase, the* President
also said, would enlarge the whol
scale of financial operations, in thi
count) y by the Ai'ird government i
and thus affect practically the niirworld.
The President added that he did
not believe the farmers of America1
"depend upon a stimulation of prio N
to do their utmost to serve th(. na
tion and the world at this time of
crisis."
Farmers Patriotic.
The potriotic spirit of the farmers,
the President said, had been "wor- i
thy of all praise and has shown them
playing- a most admirable and gratifying
part in the full mobilization of
the resources of the country."
He added that the bumper crops
which they have raised this yeav
have relieved "the anxiety of the
nations arrayed against Germany
with regard to their food supplies."
Congress was further informe 1
that the President did not believe
that such inelastic provisions as contained
in the bill could be administered
in a way that would be advantageous
to the producer and consumer
because they establish arbitrary
levels which arc quite independent
of the normal market conditions.
