Stamps may be bough! * ^ _ I * HUNS STOPPED ON BOTH FRONTS Washington.?News from France today that the Germans in attempt^ ing a powerful attack on Rheims had met with their first absolute check in the West since their great drive tofan in March added grteatly to the opt'mistic impression created here by the successful stemming of the Austrian tide in Italy. The defense of Rheims is regarded by t'ficers here as the more striking since the city is surrounded on three / sides and only a short time ago its early fall was forecast. The reports today show that the Germans enc'tavored to sweep over the defenders from all sides. The significance of the German thrust is not clear. Some observers here were inclined to view it as intended to cover the fact that German reserves have been rushed to Italy to prop up the Austrian drive. Others, however, were not inclined to believe that events in Italy had as yet served to draw upon the German forces i ufficiently to embarrass 86 riously the Western campaign. They regarded it as possible that the attack was launched for the purpose of paving the way for a later grand assault on the Compiegnc front where the French, aided at one point by Am ericans, have clung obstinately to positions that hamper development of the whole German scheme of reaching the channel ports. ?o \ NOTICE OF SALE. r Under and by virtue of the decree and judugment of the court made by his Honor S. The very serious recent developments in the military situation ha j made it necessary to suspend this order. I am advised by Mr. Bright Williamson, chairman of the Darlington County Exemption Board, that out of the quota of 54 whites just ordered from this County there are only 8 available who are not farmers. Forty-six young white farmers will, therefore, have to leave their farms at once for the service of their country. The government well understands the hardships which this will mean to many of these men, but the military necessities are so great that nothing else can now be taken into consideration. The people at home, however, ought to see to it that the crops of the drafted farmers all Over the State are destroyed for lack of work. The patriotic citizens living in the neighborhood of any farm whose manager or chief laborer is taken, should see, that labor is provided to work the crop.
