two HOW SHEEP ROCKS WILL SAVE lABOD Used as Lawn Mower-: at ti White House in Washington . RAISING OF SHEEP IS TO BE ENCOURAGED There is Money Now in Sheep Raising in This Country. There are thousands of places in the United States where grass is now going to waste that would support small flocks of sheep. Among such places are public parks, golf courses, private estates with large lawns, arai college grounds. Over most of these areas a lawn mower is run regularly to keep down the grass. If a flock of sheep were subsittuted for the lawn mower not only would the grass be utilized for food production but the labor now necessary to keep the grass cut would be released for other anil more essential war work. Of course, considerable care needs to be exercised in the matter of stocking such open areas with sheep. The creation of a big demand for animals for this purpose so as to interfere seriously with normal market conditions would not be desirable. The United States Department of Agriculture advises persons c'u#rged with the care of such properties t ? consider putting in some sheep, but to investigate conditions thoroughly before they embark in the enterprise. The Animal Husbandry Division of the Department will be g!ud to answer requests for information, and has a number of publications on the subject available for free distribution. It is beleived that in many instances. particularly on the large golf courses and at educational institutions having extensive grounds, sheep raising could be practiced in such manner as to bring a large measure both of pleasure and profit. This should be particularly true on school grounds where ordinarily some member of the faculty is a good enough animal husbandman to give them tho proper care. In any event, it is a matter worthy of careful consideration. The gro,;s annual Veturns from esve: cf breeding age may be expected to range as high as $20 a head. The fleece from on': sheep averages from five to eight pounds and is now selling for frcm 50 tp 65 cents a pound. One 1.- rub tc each ewe is a conservative estimate The lamb at five month.* will wcigi approximately (10 pounds and b< worth probably 20 cents a pound. A flock of 20 ewes su?h as could b< maintained on a good-sized eolleg( campus might be expected, there fore, to yield an annual profit of ap proximately $350, which would go < good way toward endowing a loc tureship. Aside from the question of direc profit, sheep would be useful on sucl lawns in eradicating weeds. Fo several years the Kansas State agri cultural college spent over $480 year on the college campus in an ef fort to eradicate dandelions. *Abou three years ago, the animal husban ry depa, tment was short of pastur for its sheep and suggested to til college authorities that if the mone formerly spent for dandelion erad cation were turned over to then they would undertake to get rid f the dandelions by grazing the shec on the campus . Today there ai practically no dandelions on tl Jvansas agricultural college ground The same thing would be true on ar other large lawn. In practically i cases, in order to keep them out flower beds and shrubbery, shc< must be herded. This can be dor however by unskilled labor, even I small children, and the expense ne xiot be large. People who install sheep on law will be following an illustrious exa pie. For many weeks now a sm fleck of sheep has been grazing the White House grounds, conve ing the grass which was formei wasted into good meat and wool, a incidentally keeping down wc< that were a source of endl - * 1 < trouble. It has been iounu lliut sheep are not only useful but or , mental. Many thousands of peo have been attracted by the pre picture of the fleecy animals in P ident Wilson's yard. STATE ITEMS I OP INTEREST TO ALL SOUTH i CAROLINA PEOPLE Governor Manning: received a tele jram from Mayor Hyde of Charles,? laying that one of the two ship ids of nitrate of soda which haecn tied up at the docks owing tf inability to cecurc stevodores to discharge the fertilizer, had been unloaded and the work of unloading the other was under way. The educational forces of the State will be enlisted in the campaign for improved public health and sanitation which the State Council of Defense will inaugurate throughout South Carolina this summer as a war measure. Camp Jackson will have several very large additions in the near future. The necessity of conserving ice beomcs important with the summer months ahead, and the food adminisration for South Carolina has issued i bulletin in which some precaution\ry suggestions arc made. Camp Jackson outranks every amp in America in its religious .vork, according to the last report. The educational work at Camp .ukson is now practically fully or anized and work:ng in a way t ilease the heart of the most exartng efficiency expert. This is to be an off-season for mosjuitoes at Camp Jackson with the eamp sanitary detachment (loins such efficient work. Should congress decide that it is lecessary at this time to extend the 'raft age limits either below 21 or 'hove 31, or both, no opposition will be offered by the war department. GERMAN ADVANCE DEFINITELY CHECKED German attacks on each side of the French salient between Montdidier and Soissons seem to have been definitely checked by last Fritlay. Halted in their rush toward Campiegne and unable rapidly to outflank the French by their onslaught southwest of Soissons, the 'enemy apparently ceased his plunging tactics which began Sunday and for a time threatened vital French positions. The French official statement says that only local fighting occurred along the front of attack during the day* before. The latest German attempt to break through the French lines lasted but five days before it reached the phase of equilibrium, which mark i i i. _i r a\. . . i* l ^ _ i .. eel mc em oj me critical pcnous n tlie Picauly, Flanders, and Aisno drives. The Germans have held north of the Aronde and Matz rivers, to the west of the Oise. They failed to make serious attacks against the new French positions east of that river. Southwest of Soissons they advar.c ed practically a mile over a four-mile front, but their progress was so : low that after the inception of the fighting little anxiety was felt concerning future events in that region. Sectors further south, which include the points at which the American forces are fighting were h avily bombarded by the enemy, but no further infantry attacks had been launched by him. An inference that might be drawn from the apparent haste of the Germans in beginning their great attack east of Montdidier almost as soon uh their sweeping advance on the Aisn^ fiont had been checked at the Marnc is that another German offensive rr.ay be speedily launched. PRESENTS FIGURES Washington.?Upward of 40,000 men will be needed to man the great fleet of the war ships which the United States will turn out during the next fiscal year the house naval | committee was advised \ today by Secretary Daniels. In asking the house to concur ju the senate amendment to the naval appropriation increasing the navy's enlisted personnel from 87,000 to 131,485 men. Mr. Daniels transmitted letters from Admiral Benson, chief of naval opertaions, and Itcar Admiral Palmer, of the Bureau of navigation showing in details why | this increase is necessary. The correspondence revealed that I new war ships are being turned out faster than they can be manned with the present limited personnel and that should there be a change of j naval tactics and the nation bo forejed to a defensive instead of an offensive fight, the navy would be se| riously handicapped in handling the I fleet against an enemy. Admiral Palmer said in his letter that a shortage of officers of higher J grade should be made up, pointing cut that American destroyers now are operating in the war zone with out a designated commander other than the British officer, Admiral j Hayley. The submarine chaser lorce | in foreign waters is commanded by I a captain, the admiral said, whereas there should be at least one rear admiral ana preferably two for this force. o Piles Cured In 6 to 14 Days ' Your druggist will refund money il PAZO ; OINTMENT lulls to cure any case of Itching, Stiuu.Slccd'.ss or Protruding Piles in 6 to 14 dam ' The firai application glees Ease and Eest. 50c > Socialist msanifestations took place in Vienna last week. i _____ Carolina ittee has desigWAR SAVINGS \te are to agree in war Savings mmunity should ids lowest in the and we know us to have the state's name, nayors of South >f MERCHANTS' intensive camto June 28th. e a War Savings me other effecof your town to lan originated in into an agreeanizations in the it in a campaign le government's as all others, will your patriotic co~ 3 COMMITTEE, retary. The Vienna city council passed a resolution protesting against the reduction of the bread ration. Large units of German shock troops which had been concentrated on the western side of Rheims between Vrigny and Ornes and which went over to assault were met with such an awful fire from the French defense that they were unable to make the slightest progress. Austria's grave food situation, coupled with the* apparent failure of the new offensive against Italy is exciting pessimistic comment in the Vienna press. o Whenever You Need a General Ionic Take Grove's.
