V Although Germany, while yet a
"friend," Intrigued against our peace
and order, urged Japan and-Mexico to
make war on ua. and murdered our
men, women and children, there are
those among us professing loyalty and
intelligence who practically say this Is
not our war and appear unable to real- j
ixc that the defeat of the boche is as
vltul to us Americans as was the victory
of 1770.
Then we declared for Independence;
now we light to maintain It.
It Is not merely thai we tight in
answer to Indignity and material injury
done us through uttnelc on our
t i) rights us a nation and on the lives
of our citizens?not merely to uphold
our place among self-respecting peoples?that
we are at war; hut literally |
for our self preservation as u republic.
To muzZile this war-mad wild beast !
we have taken up arms?that the i
world shall be safe for the freemen of
the world.
The world cannot rest in pence while j
Germany holds the destiny of other ,
peoples in her hinod-dripping hands, j
The world cannot live in peace with
ti people that commits, or permits her
^ sponsors to commit In her name, the
foul acts of treachery, of vandalism,
of bestiality, of murder, that have ,
marked the trail of the German army
over ISuropo.
One doctrine or the other must pre- '
vail ; either the German brutal right of
might or the etvili/ed might of right
one or the other must succumb in this
conflict to the death. And should it
be the German doctrine then shall we
fall iinda** the domination of a people
that have robbed and raped and looted
and burned and killed, that the
4,kultur" of a militury oligarchy shall
five.
Prussianlsm Is devoid of honor, '
truth, justice or mercy, as Its own acts
have proved, and its defeat Is a neees^
aary first step for the peace of the
M world and the freedom of civilization.
* For the safety of American Institutions
It must he destroyed: for the
)a?fety of American freedom, yours and
*nine and of all of us.
We are in the midst of war, our war,
tthe war of every freeman, of every
bjuon and woman who does not indorse
owardly murderous assault upon the
wreak and Iniioeen';, hrutal injustice,
s mud atrocious acts; and if we would
ppreaurve tin* Stars and Stripes and all
\ jtbey Stand for we must fl;rht the IIiidk
sthrond and the pacifists at home with
;a.ll our strength.

line the War-Clouds
With Your Silver
I
EST April the war-cloud left the horizon
and spread over our entire sky.
Its silver lining consists solely of the resources
of America in men and money.
For these alone can bring a victorious, swift ?
end to the war. H
To keep that silver lining bright and evident, I
all of us who stay at home must do certain 1
? f ? OQ
simple and very necessary things. |
First of all we must save not only large
amounts with which to buy Liberty Bonds, but
small coins to buy Thrift Stamps and War
Savings Stamps.
These small savings are really as important
as the larger ones.
[Through them the government expects us |
to lend the country two billion dollars eight 1
! billion quarters. |
T~> I t ' 1 3
IlLvery quarter you save Dy doing without |
unnecessary luxuries buys a hrift Stamp. I
When you get sixteen of these Thrift Stamps
turn them in at any post office, bank or regular
appointed agent and you will get one War
Savings Stamp.
This savings stamp is the government's
promise to pay you, at the end of five years,
one five-dollar gold piece.
These $5.00 War Savings Stamps are exchangeable
for cash any time between now and
January 1, 1923, upon giving ten days' written
notice to any money order post office. You
get the cost price plus accumulated interest.
IBy buying them you make available money
that now has no effect in hastening victory
and swift victory is the silver lining of the warcloud
over us.
Begin buying them now and keep on
buying.
Your post office money order station, or
your bank, can sell them to you and tell you
everything you want to know about them.

Germany's victory would mean all 11
that the .alarmists have said?the set
?acn of humanity, democracy, clvill/.ulion,
rights of man, etc. But, to Amer- :1
lou, It would mean infinitely more. u
It would meau our first national de- *
feat; and, thus, would smusli our period
record for victories a record as
old as our nution u record that means 11
more than the right to brag, liven as *
a beaten army never wholly regains its v
old form even as a beaten ring chain- 'l
pion sinks at once into desuetude so c
our nation (Its traditions of victory
gone) would suffer far worse doterlora- 1
tiou than the mere fact of defeat could i p
Inflict. p
It would mean that the man who lias v
risked all in his country's struggle for
Right could never again feel Ids former 1
calm certainty that Right must tri-j,
umph. Tims, the moral tone of the in- i "
dividual, as well as of the nation,
would inevitably be lowered.
This country has never embarked in
a war of conquest. From 177~> to the
present we have fought for Liberty or
for I'nion or for the Oppressed ever
for some sterling principle of right. ,
From childhood we have been taught
to believe that the high unselfishness (
of our war aims has given us the \ ic- 1
tory. We have seen the decay or do- 1
struction of men and nations that have k
battled for dominion as (lermnny is t
now battling. Should we fail in this. (1
our mightiest war for the Right, the ^
average man must lose forever the
simple Faith which has led our dear
country from nothingness to Its present
estate. For that Faith, more than j;|
for anything else, our sacrifice is a v
hundredfold Justified. '
