An intensive campaign will r)d |
waged throughout South Carolina j
during the two weeks beginning May J
14th and ending May 28th for the [
sale of War Savings Stamps, and '
u Horry County, always in line in '
every forward movement, will also
get the benefit of this campaign.
As has been announced heretofore
during this campaign, an effort will ?
be made to raise Horry's allotmc nt
approximately $460,000.00 in pledge:- ,
as was done in the Red Cross campaign,
although the pledge is in |
quite a different form. Those who j
^ are familiar with Horry and th
mettle of her people confidently believe
that it will bo raised, although
it will take a long pull and a strcng
pull and a pull together, with every
mnn. wnmnn unrl nltiLI in flw> i; /
doing his or her part to the utmcFt.
It has been realized by those in
Authority that there is very little
Ufready money in the country at this (
time and especially now do the people
need all of their ready cash for 3
making and harvesting their crops,
but the plan outlined makes the raising
of the fund by pledges possible.
Knowing that it will necessitate .
every nook and corner of the count\
being worked thoroughly, the Horr

'to work Little River and Dogwood
Nock jointly, Dogbluff and Baybor
jointly, and Green Soa and Sccas
tee jointly, and that portion of allotment
which has not boon raised ,
at these meetings will be gone aft<
' by enthusiastic workers in an inten
sive campaign to follow the day irn
irr'.'lately after the campaign moor.
inS-.
The committee in charge of the4 <
itinerary has seen fit to designate
tordy the day in which the townships ,
f will be worked, but it is under- ;
stood that on that day each section |
of the Township will be intensively j
r campaigned by meetings held at ev- ,
ery school building, both white and (
colored, in the Township at the same
time, it being expected that the ,
? workers in each Township will see J.
to it that the meetings are held in ,
/ ^ery locality und the matter thor ?
oughly advertised.
The Horry Council will exert CV i
f ery effort to assist each Township
/in solving this problem by furnish- (
1 ing speakers and workers wherever (
:needed. Of course, the task is a j
great one and it will hardly be pos- ,
sible to secure a sufficient number r
| ' p of speakers and workers to be at ev- J j
r V ery school house, but it is hoped as
neatly as possible to do this.
These imeetings will be held for
*thp purpose of thoroughly explaining
tme War Savings Stamps; our allotment
and cllf>o to take initial subscriptions;
and following tlfe meetj
ings held at each school building, the
work will be continued by local offi- I
cers and special committees who will ?
I work until tho^lose of the campaign t
or until the total amount is pledged,- ?
the campaign closing on Friday June 1
28th which has been set apart as t
National War Savings day, at which r
time every Council is urged to hold a j
I final meeting at their headquarters
< and complete the task, making full t
. ysport to county headquuarters next s

J. R. BOWIES IS >
HERE ON BUSINESS
^ . * 1'1 '"Li,
J. R. Bowles, of Danville, Va., arrived
in Conway one day last week
to remain a day or two on business.
While over hero ho spent sorrte time
I in going through the tobacco grow|
ing sections of the countv looking if.
j Die crop as it now stands and in orJ
dor to obtain a good idea of the outlook
as to a good crop.
He stated that the crop, in his
opinion, will not be as heavy as was
thought at first. The tobacco in
many places is "buttoning" too early
showing the effects cf bad seasons.
The recent rains he said would ,do??
the crops much good and the price
would likely be good for the crop;
but that the crop would be cut short
in production owing to the adverse
circumstances this Spring.
Mr. Bowles is still the representative
of one of the strongest firms on
the market. He has been coming to
Horry every tobacco season for abojut
eleven years and he keeps in toucii
with the situation here from time
to time. His experience makes hi#
views on the crop situation of groat
value.
