With tho American Army in
France, last week.?The Ameiicau
line now runs l.r>() to 200 yards ea.d

attack today. The near st
German trench is several hundred

America's first offensive blow was
struck in a mi^t. The I*'reach tanks
apparently did not have much <o do.
as thf* American artlilery air ady
had prepared the way. A bright sun
came out and shone on the Ameri\
cans as they dug in their new positions.
As the Americans started out
across No Man's Land there wore
many jokes about "eating- Boehe foi
breakfast." The Americans fought
as though they were veterans and
there was no hesitation when the officers
sprang forward and shouted:
"Come on, boys." Several officers ^
describing the scene, agreed that the
outstanding-, feature in their minds
was the wonderful morale of the men
and their absolute confidnoee in them
selves. The Germans poured ma- I
chine gun bullets all around the Americans
as they were digging in. but
no attention was paid to them as |
jokes and quibs were handed bark '
and forth. j
Tim? demeanor of the men wounded
in action was similarly cheerful
when the correspondent visited the
field hospitals this afternoon. He j
saw stretched out on their cots a num (
ber of these Americans for the most 1
part only slightly wounded, who act- j {
ed like school boys returned from a j
great day of sport, smoking cigarettes.,
eagerly relating their person- j
a$ experiences and laughing loudly at *
Hie humorous incidents. !
Lieut. Georg6 E. Butler, formerly l
an attorney in Indianopolis, who wa., ;
slightly wounded in the leg, said tha 1
going over the top was like a ma- 1

about the approaching adventure '
with cheerful anticipations. t
j "When we reached CanLigny." he ' \
added, "it was only a pile of bricks i
an<l stooe.s. Our artillery had level- 1;
led the town. The German machine ?
gun bullets were buzzing about like
bees, but our fellows did not paf any f
more attention to them than if they h
Yiad been confetti. 1<
* "It was the finiest example of a
team work I ever saw. There was not d
2 Jbitch anywhere. The men cracked
jokes and sang, but they were busi- ?
nesslike in their work." t
Lieutenant Albert E. Billings, of ji
Brooklyn, N. Y., who also was flight
ly wounded, was placed on a cot ad- t
joining that of Lieutenant Butler, y
