THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 1918
Land is increasing in value in
Horry County as more and more of
it is cleared.
o
This country is keeping an eye on
Mexico, and it is just as well that it
does so.
o
Something will be doing on the
"West crn front before the Summer is
g< ne.
o
Germany may hate this country
even now, but nothing to compare to
what it will be when this country
shall have shown the German people
what they actually have against them
in this fight.
o
It is not good policy to meddle witl
the other man's business; and it is
also important to keep the other man
out of yours.
The allies arc now all working together
and have one head from which
plans for the war will come. This ;s
the way to work to the best advantage;
and it will bear fruit before tlu
year is out.
o
I
Russia will prove all that Germany
can handle although there may be no
longer any Russian armies to tackle.
o
The United States have become
powerful in the last century. After
this war shall have been won the
mind can hardly conceive the great
things that may tak?- palee in d"velopment
here.
1 o
Scarcity of labor and the high cost
of building material will lessen building
enterprises for the period of tinwar.
4)
Even men of genius will do foolish
things. Henry Kurd's peace party Is
it fair sample. There is some differ-'
ence in stopping this war and in planning
a Kord factory. K< rd found
this out.
No matter what else the Herniu
may do, and no matter what may b"
thought of the paper: there is on?thing
sure, and that i. that this paper
has enlisted to do what it can t
win this war. If you can suggest
anything the paper may do to further
that object, your suggestion- will he
considered.
If you are. under the impression
that Germany is too far off across
the seas to do us any harm; remember
that if the United States can
send armies to Krance, Germany
<*oui(l sonn armies nere. wake up to
the danger today and put all that you
can do against the Kaiser.
~o
No county in the State is now developing
more rapidly than this.
Time has been when the forest covered
great stretches of Horry County
with no farms to break the landscape
for miles and miles. This is
all passing away as the lands are being
cleared up and planted to crops.
Fields dot the ' great tracts in numberless
rotation in any direction yon

STATES THE REASON
FOR SLOW DELIVERY
In reference to the late delivery of
the nitrates ordered by farmers in
this section. Senator H. L. I?tick sent
a telegram to Hon. K. 1>. Smith, and
the following letter received by Mr.
Puck from the government bureau, i
gives the latest information on the
subject:

reference to the delivery of nitrate of I
soda to farmers in your section, has j
been referred to this Department for |
attention.
Ownig to war conditions, it was im- i
possible to secure tonnage to transport
to this country sufficient nitrate :
to make complete delivery of all ni- j
trate needed during the months of 1
March and April. Shipping arrange- !
mcnts are encouraging for deliveries j
after that time.
In order to make the fairest and
most equitable distribution of the
small quantity available for immediate
distribution, this Department dedecided
to appoint in each county of
South Carolina a special distributor,
to whom all nitrate for that county
would he consigned, and who would j
make distiibution with reference to'
the immediate needs of farmers. The !
distributor for Horry County is M \ j
W. L. Richardson, Conway, S. C. The i
proportionate allotment for Horry
County will bo shipped according to i
the instructions given by Mi*. Richardson,
who will deliver the nitrate to
the farmers. We expect to begin ship
ment to him this week.
Yours very truly,
?D. S. Murph,
