The recent cold period succeeded in
bringing out some new sellers of
wood in Conway. The people were
without any coal and the Conway
Lumber Co., had to discontinue the
sale of board ends to the general publie
in order to have enough to supply
the hands of the company. Partners
living near Conway soon learned that
there was a ready market for ad
kinds of wood here, and the condition
was not so had after all about seeming
fuel to tide over the cold weather.

GOVERNOR THINKS STATE
WILL ACT
v ' ' ' *
Governor Manning believes that the
Stutli Carolina legislature will adopt
the national prohibition amendment it
the approaching session. This opinion
was expressed yesterday in a tel
eg ram sent to The World* and The
Tribune, New York newspapers. The
telegram sent by.Governor Manning
I in response to queries from these two
waiKis read: 1
"Have no doubt that South Carolina
will adopt prohibition amendmcnt.
The benefits of liquor reatric*
tion adopted by the State have, been
great and generally recognized. Thi.;
makes the next stop easy."
It is p'obable that Governor Manning
will recommend that no night
sessions be held during th0 session of
the legislature to relieve fuel shortage.
The chief executive explained
that such a recommendation will like
ly be embodied in his opening message
of recommendations.
While in Washington the last few
days Governor Manning was assured
that rifles for the regiment of State
troops would bo available by January
1 '). The type of rifl0 with which this
regiment will be equipped is the 750
K rag-.J orgenson.
The governor talked over the coal
situation with Dr. 11. A. Garfield. The
State's immediate supply of coal is
much below the quantity needed. It
was sue vested that old <>rnss:t itv<
along the railroad tracks might do
much to relieve the present stringency.
S ,
o
T. F. Cooper was here one day reef
ntly.
J. A. Cartrette was among those
visiting Conway a few days ago.
If by partly substituting wood onefourth
of the coal burned by favmoia
and one-tenth of ti e coal burned ir\
villages could ho saved, the coal
would amount to nearly 3,000,00>
tons, or between 0">,000 and 70,000 car
loads.
Farmers in Northern and Eastern
States could make this saving pos%
sible by drawing on their woodland*
for winter supplies, according to a
circular just issued by the United
States Department of Agriculture.

THE GROW
SDSAfi SITUATION
STILL NOT BELIEVED
The supply of sugar in Conway and
other places in Horry County ran
lower and lower during the past
month until last week for some time
only ten cents worth could be bought.
Several weeks ago the quantity which
one person might buv was limited to
a certain number of pounds per week
Those who had been used to having
plenty of this commodity all their
lives felt the scarcity and showed it.
All last week ten cents worth could
be bought at the store of Burroughs
& Collins Company and no moio.
This week it was announced that the
Grocery Store of the Conway Bargain
House would sell two pounds to each
customer at the price of 12 1-2 cents
per pound.
Groc.erymen here who had ordered
sugar from their wholesale houseweek
after week got tired of waiting
for th(? sugar to come. There is *\
shortage of it in this section of tlv
country and the shortage will hardly
be received for some time to come.
The trouble in relation to sugar
will perhaps get the people ready for
year for 1918. We join with
e hope that Horry County will no
